Between 350 and 400 athletes are expected to participate next Saturday at the 22nd edition of the YOUNG LIFE TRIATHLON (Olympic & Paddle) next Saturday in Detroit Lakes. Registration closes at 11:59 tonight, so act quickly to get into this awesome event.

On the competitive side, three of last year's winners are returning and we would be surprised of they didn't prevail once again. We're talking about SEAN PICKLE and local star / likely 2025 Triathlete of the Year nominee CAMI ECKHOFF repeating in the Sprint race, with KADIE (HOKANSON) STEINBRING leading the women's field in Olympic competition.

Climate Change is real, never moreso than in Milwaukee last weekend. Participants in Saturday's AGE GROUP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS endured stifling heat, humidity, winds and angry seas, and the med tent and finishing times reflected those conditions. Then came the overnight rains that flooded much of the race course and knocked down or destroyed staging resources resulting in the cancellation of Sprint Nationals. At times like these we need to remember that no city has produced finer Nationals than Milwaukee, so the climatological events of the past weekend should not tarnish its reputation.

Deserving special mention is three-time National Champion HEATHER LENDWAY, who managed to finish 6th / 1st 40-44W in the women's Olympic competition.

Also deserving special mention is 16-year-old ADELINE ALTHAUS-KOTILA, who was the fastest of 1108 entrants in Sunday's YWCA WOMEN'S TRIATHLON. Adeline also won the Lake Rebecca Tri in late July and with one more non-draft legal race this season will be a serious candidate for Minnesota Junior of the Year.

The GREEN LAKE TRIATHLON was a great event as usual and we'll post coverage on MTN later this week.

A lot to write about this weekend--Northwoods, Nationals, YWCA Women's Tri, Green Lake--but we're too pooped to do it now. Will post on Facebook tomorrow morning and Northwoods coverage on MTN in the afternoon.

There are a significant number of Minnesota triathletes who do not race on home soil, opting usually for competing in Ironman-branded events. One such athletes is JULIA CURRY, 36, of St. Paul, who recently improved her IM time from 10:10:04 (Austria '24 / 10th amateur woman overall) to 9:49:45 earlier this season at Ironman Canada-Ottawa, where she placed 3rd / 1st US. Congrats Julia, and thanks to Gordy Hill for bringing this exciting news to MTN.

MTN congratulates SPENCER SYVERSTON, who remains undefeated in Minnesota Triathlon action in 2025. He picked up his fifth victory yesterday at the fifth annual ALEXANDRIA TRIATHLON. His 53:46 was 36-seconds faster than his 2024 race record. His younger brother EASTON, who was coming off a Top 3 finish at Chisago 70.3, was 2nd, his 56:25 was 1:20 faster than last year's clocking.

Not to be outdone, 2024 Minnesota Masters the Year KADIE (HOKANSON) STEINBRING) won the woman's race again, this time lowering her own CR from to 1:06:45 to 1:05:22. As in 2024 KOELLEN KOHLMAN-PETRICK finished 2nd.
