NORTH CAROLINA’S FIRST FM HISPANIC RADIO STATION CELEBRATES TWENTY YEARS ON THE AIR
Raleigh – Today, March 7th at 5:00 pm, La Ley 101.1 FM will celebrate exactly twenty years on the air by playing the original audio of the transition from Star 96.9 to La Ley, 96.9 FM, and with a celebration at Capital Chevrolet in Raleigh. More than ten years ago, La Ley transitioned to 101.1 FM. This new signal allows the station to cover all of central North Carolina and Southern Virginia, one of only a handful of Hispanic radio stations in the country to broadcast on a 100,000-watt signal.
La Ley was the first FM Hispanic radio station in North Carolina and today has grown to serve more than 200,000 listeners per week. The celebration on Tuesday will begin a full year of commemorations and events around the state in recognition of the 20th Anniversary.
In 2003 Curtis Media Group founder and CEO, Don Curtis, recognized that the small but growing Latino population in the state had no representation on North Carolina airwaves. “Twenty years ago Mr. Curtis felt that Hispanics weren’t being served with what was offered on radio,” general manager Shirley Davenport said recently. “That’s when La Ley was born.” When asked about that dedication to North Carolina Hispanics, Davenport replied, “We strive every day to make sure we serve our listeners, our advertisers and our La Ley team. My motto is ‘Work hard, play harder,’ and I think we do that very well.”
By listenership and revenue, La Ley is one of the most successful of all radio stations in the state of North Carolina and was recently recognized by InsideRadio as the fourth (4th) ranked Regional Mexican radio station in the country (Nielsen: 18-49, AQH, M-F 6a-7p, Spring 2022). “La Ley takes pride in connecting with Hispanic listeners through our music, contests, news and entertainment features,” said Julie Garza, La Ley program director for more than eighteen years. “It has been my privilege to have this opportunity to lead La Ley. We look forward to many more anniversaries."
