🚧 Lake County Works to Rebuild Roads After Historic Rainfall
On Oct. 26, parts of Mount Dora and Eustis saw an unprecedented 15 to 19 inches of rain in just a few hours — overwhelming roads and stormwater systems. Wolf Branch Road, which had only recently reopened after Hurricane Milton, was damaged once again but is expected to reopen in about four weeks with improved drainage and road modifications.
“We understand the frustration our residents feel,” says Lake County Commission Chairman Leslie Campione. “These closures are such a disruption to our daily commutes and routines, especially since this same road washed out last year during Hurricane Milton, but Lake County is working to rebuild this segment with drainage enhancements and modifications to the road elevation that will accommodate increased runoff from businesses upstream.”
Following the storm, Lake County declared a local State of Emergency, activated its Emergency Operations Center, and deployed crews to pump 30 million gallons of floodwater from impacted areas.
Repairs to Wolf Branch Road are already underway, while Britt Road remains closed as the County finalizes property access and engineering plans for a long-term fix. Campione explained that Wolf Branch repairs could proceed more quickly because the County already owns the necessary land on both sides of the road.
“The County will continue to work on Britt Road diligently in the coming months,” Campione says. “These repairs are a top daily priority, and we won’t stop until this road is restored.”
Lake County officials say they remain committed to providing realistic timelines and daily progress as work continues to improve the county’s stormwater infrastructure and keep residents safe.
