Keeping the Eye On the Subject
Today, it's the year 2025.
And since 2007, I've published more than 250,000 photos on f/go (www.f-go.us).
In 2024, just 2,981 photos were published on f/go. That's far below the 18 year average of 13,889 photos. And far below peak years when I'd often publish in the range of 20,000 photos per year. Personal travel, including an epic bike trek across France, meant I missed so, so many events. And believe me, I mean I missed them. I so much enjoy the experience of shooting sports.
So should I be disappointed? Should I feel like I'm losing my edge? Do I need to question if I'm beginning to fail?
Subject versus Object in Photojournalism
As a photographer, it's the "subject" that is the main focus. It's not the ball, the puck, or the "object" of the sporting event that I'm seeking to centerpiece in the composition. And to that end, it's not the volume of photos that matters most. It's the subjective matter that means most.
Objective Data Show Subjects Live
It's always fun to run the objective numbers of photo views at the end of each year. For 2024, I am delighted to realize that there were more than 1.6 million views of photos on f/go. That's pretty incredible for a year when the number of new photos added to f/go grew by under 3,000 photos.
Top two dates of visits to f/go in 2024 were February 2nd, March 10th, with each day in the exceeding 20,000 views for each day. Those days associate with a great Minneapolis girls basketball game to determine the City Conference Championship between Roosevelt and Southwest, the Minneapolis South boys basketball team's state-qualifying Section Championship.
Funny thing, the third top day of photo views was on December 16th with more than 17,000 views. But what drove that number? Apparently what happens on f/go most every day; not a single event but rather a breadth of events. No single gallery had more than 600 views, but something like 500 galleries were visited that day! Some of the galleries visited on that day are dated as far back as 2010!
Historically, Subjects Live a Long Time
Here was the craziest statistic of 2024. The top two most popular f/go galleries were the 10/17/13 and 10/18/13 USA Ultimate National Championships Day and Day 2 events. Those galleries, more than a decade old, were visited by 31,237 and 29,565 respectively. That means that more than a quarter of the photos viewed in 2024 were from just two days of an ultimate (Frisbee) tournament more than a decade ago.
f/go's motto of "building community around the spirit of sport" and I am humbly grateful to begin 2025 reviewing the data that says its spirit is a bright as ever.
My best wishes to the f/go community for the coming year. I look forward to seeing you soon!
