CANFIELD — The Ohio State Highway Patrol has released an initial crash report on the Oct. 16 crash on state Route 11 that killed Trooper Nicholas Cayton. It indicates that the driver of the truck that hit the back of Cayton’s cruiser was not intoxicated by alcohol or drugs, but was “distracted.”The section of the report involving distraction does not specify some of the common types of distraction, such as texting or talking on the telephone. It does not specify whether the distraction came from inside the vehicle or outside the vehicle. It indicates that the distraction was “unknown” or “other.”

LISBON — Votes for former Columbiana school board candidate Nicholas Clemmer won’t count since he officially dropped out of the race Monday morning.Due to the late withdrawal, his name remains on the printed ballot but Columbiana County Board of Elections Deputy Director Niki Wilkinson said signs will be posted at the affected precincts so that voters today will know he’s withdrawn and a vote for him won’t be counted.

NEW CUMBERLAND – The Hancock County Board of Education considered several personnel moves as part of its meeting Monday.Among those were the hiring of Ashley K. Hinerman as LPN/Autism mentor at New Manchester Elementary, and Penny Ellis as Bus Operator 142 under the Transportation Department. Assistant Superintendent Dave Smith noted earlier in the meeting both positions had been vacant.

According to Chance Weyand, who coordinates this effort along with colleague Hugh Tate on behalf of the Hancock County Deputy Sheriffs Association, applications are available at all three county 7Elevens as well as the public libraries in Hancock County plus printable version on the non-profit’s official page.

NEW CUMBERLAND – Showing the effort to help animals doesn’t have any borders, the Jefferson County Humane Society is officially overseeing management of the Hancock County Animal Shelter. Hancock County commissioners and representatives of the Humane Society were joined by animal shelter staff and other guests Friday morning as they signed the contract making the transition official.
