A Clever, Creative, and Completely Captivating Night at the Theater!

Short On Drama at the Farr Best Theater is anything but short on entertainment! Presented by the talented team at the Fleetwood Project, this unique production features nine original short plays written by Texas playwrights, selected from 19 submissions. Each story offers something completely different — and with only four actors per act, most of the 14 performers take on multiple roles, bringing an impressive 33 characters to life over the course of the evening.

From the spooky laughs of Agatha Brixton’s Curated Haunts (featuring a teddy bear–wielding ghost, er, inhabitant...) to the cosmic curiosity of Report From the Front, and the witty banter of Heard Mentality, each act showcases clever writing and standout performances. The format feels fresh and fun — as Executive Director Stevie Dawn Carter says, “If the first story isn’t for you, wait 15 minutes — you’ll get another one.

"What I like about this is, I know not every play may be perfect for every human, but every human in here will find a play they love. And I like that. Within two hours, you're gonna find something new that you like and you're gonna talk about it when you leave. And I think that's cool. Because we've never done anything like that before, so that's my favorite part,” said Carter.

Personal favorites include The Gunslinging Ballerina Strikes Again, a hilarious Sam Spade-style parody where Carter herself shines in a tutu, and Gate 47, a quirky Twilight Zone–inspired encounter in a tiny New Mexico airport. Every act is directed by one of the actors, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and pure creative joy.

Whether you’re in it for the laughs, the chills, or the clever storytelling, Short On Drama delivers a fast-paced, wildly entertaining night out. The audience left buzzing — exactly as Carter predicted — about which play they loved most.

News, talk and information.

Those three words are a summation of my entire career. I remember the day — November 28, 1980 (the day after Thanksgiving) — when I received a phone call from a college classmate who told me of a job opening at the local news/talk station that he was working at. I told him that I didn’t want to work in news; that I was chasing a dream of being a morning show DJ. Then, I got a little talking to.

“This is the number-one rated station in San Diego and we need you. Get your butt down here on Monday,” I was told. I applied for the job and started a few days later only to find out that I would happily maintain a 40-year love affair with news, talk and information.

Sidebar: a 32-plus year love affair also grew out of news, talk and information: I met my wife while working in news radio in San Diego. She was a reporter while I was a talk show director. But I digress...
