Did you see the viral clip of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis saying it’s okay to hit protesters with your car in that state? Were you as shocked as us when we came across it? That’s not exactly what he said. A viral podcast clip leaves out key context around a complicated law. When it comes to free speech and public safety, one hot take doesn’t tell the whole story. We rate this as a Mixed Bag. 🚗💥🧐💥

MediaWise recently took part in EducaMídia’s third annual media literacy conference in Brasília. From inspirational keynotes including Merve Lapus of Common Sense Media and our very own deputy director Brittani Kollar, to media literacy workshops focusing on AI, empowering older adults and adapting our Hit Pause curriculum, delivered by our interactive learning designer Sean Marcus, the conference provided many crucial insights to the media literacy landscape in Brazil and abroad. Teen literacy creators shared their incredible story about empowering their peers to read and think critically!
Congratulations to the entire team!

What is MediaWise?
MediaWise is a groundbreaking digital media literacy project that’s teaching millions of teens nationwide.
When the project was first imagined, we hoped to teach 1 million American teenagers how to tell fact from fiction online. Today, our work has been seen on social media by 5 million and counting, and the curriculum is yet to be released!
Misinformation is everywhere. In fact, more than half of Americans admit to sharing made-up news online. Most of them didn’t know it was fake when they shared it.
It’s becoming more difficult to tell fact from fiction, even for teenagers who grew up with the internet.
While teens are generally regarded as digitally savvy, research from our partners at Stanford History Education Group (SHEG) shows that the vast majority of teenagers have trouble navigating digital information — whether it’s viral hoaxes on Instagram, misinformation campaigns on Facebook, or sponsored content on news websites.
MediaWise is teaching the skills that teens need to be critical media consumers.
MediaWise’s main publishing platform is Instagram. We publish video fact-checks there daily and save them as “Highlights” on our Instagram profile. Expect to see roundups of our favorite video fact-checks here on Facebook and text fact-checks.
