As a journalist, Talita Rosa knew that to counter false information on a large scale, it would take more than just her and her industry colleagues. She realized that it would take a fundamental shift in how communities understand and share information. She saw an opportunity to work towards this shift by taking part in the media literacy workshops held by the Poynter Institute’s MediaWise in partnership with the International Center for Journalists. Her biggest takeaway that impacted how she developed her own media literacy workshops? Honoring the fact that workshops must be based on the audience’s needs and not just the trainer’s convictions as educators.
This is the fifth of five impact articles that are being published to celebrate Media Literacy Week. We hope you enjoyed reading about these incredible individuals who are making a positive impact on their communities! If you would like to support initiatives like this, please send us a DM.

Your mental health and digital well-being are more important than any new AI tool. Relying on AI for emotional support or advice can be dangerous. Stay healthy with regular breaks and real interactions with real people.

As a teacher educating the next generation of Ecuadorians, Gabriel Narváez, wanted to empower his students against the constant stream of unverified information. He thought his biggest challenge would be getting them to apply a skeptical mindset as they scroll their feeds. With this in mind, he joined MediaWise’s media literacy workshops, held in partnership with the International Center for Journalists, to diversify his media literacy teachings. Read Gabriel’s article at our link in bio to learn how he discovered his students were already skeptical of their feeds — it simply came down to a question of curiosity.
This is the fourth of five impact articles that are being published to celebrate Media Literacy Week. Stay tuned each day for a new article profiling another trainer making an impact in their country!
As Gabriel Narváez bridged the gap between teens and verified information, he found it’s not about skill — it’s about curiosity

What is MediaWise?
MediaWise is a groundbreaking digital media literacy project that’s teaching millions of teens nationwide.
When the project was first imagined, we hoped to teach 1 million American teenagers how to tell fact from fiction online. Today, our work has been seen on social media by 5 million and counting, and the curriculum is yet to be released!
Misinformation is everywhere. In fact, more than half of Americans admit to sharing made-up news online. Most of them didn’t know it was fake when they shared it.
It’s becoming more difficult to tell fact from fiction, even for teenagers who grew up with the internet.
While teens are generally regarded as digitally savvy, research from our partners at Stanford History Education Group (SHEG) shows that the vast majority of teenagers have trouble navigating digital information — whether it’s viral hoaxes on Instagram, misinformation campaigns on Facebook, or sponsored content on news websites.
MediaWise is teaching the skills that teens need to be critical media consumers.
MediaWise’s main publishing platform is Instagram. We publish video fact-checks there daily and save them as “Highlights” on our Instagram profile. Expect to see roundups of our favorite video fact-checks here on Facebook and text fact-checks.
