"My father wrote this poem as a gift for his mother for Christmas in 1948. I learned it and it's in my heart and head - until now - and I say it every Christmas." Then Doris shares the poem in English and in German, along with this a beautiful painting of a Christmas Angel (done by her sister-in-law). "It was a big day when the Sears catalog arrived. It was our 'wish book'. We planned what we would ask Santa to bring and, indeed, our parents enjoyed it as much as we did. It was actually our connection to the world, as we viewed new products that were now available." Vera shared about Christmas shopping before the internet. What will your grandchildren know about life before Amazon?

When Doris wrote her story and needed help putting it into a book, it only made sense that her son Anthony would illustrate the cover. This art beautifully symbolizes her childhood in Germany, and the Edelweiss growing up out of the rubble. In the top right, notice the monastery, as a nod to the time her family lived in one as refugees during WWII. It's wonderful to see this come together to illustrate Resilience!

"My mother gave me my first doll for my eighth birthday. She had no money, but traded a bicycle and a feather bed with a blanket for this beautiful doll." Doris shared the story of her precious doll from post-war Germany. She still has this doll! What are the stories behind the treasures passed along to you?

"My reward that day would be the pig bladder." Vera shared her memories of her Uncle Alexander's farm when it was time to butcher the hog. They blew up the bladder like a balloon, and it kept her entertained for the day. What unusual toys did you play with? Do you know which toys your parents - or your grandparents - played with when they were children?

Her reply? "Save a little, spend a little, enjoy life!"

Vera's book, "Love All There Is", was ready in time for her 100th birthday celebration. It was a fantastic gift for her family and friends! If your loved one has a milestone birthday coming, it might be a good time to work on a memoir.
