Qore, LLC, a joint venture between Cargill and German chemical company HELM, has begun producing QIRA, a proprietary corn-based alternative for making 1,4-butanediol (BDO), a chemical component used to manufacture polymers for consumer products and packaging.
Production at the $300 million facility in Eddyville, Iowa, began on July 10, and a grand opening was held July 22 with elected officials, farmers, interactive exhibits, and a panel discussion with company employees, executives and QIRA customers.
The facility will produce 66,000 tonnes of QIRA annually with dent sourced primarily within 100 miles of the site.
“By providing a reliable, renewable, and transparent feedstock, QIRA helps global manufacturers and brands implement identical materials that reduce reliance on oversea supply chains, bringing more transparency to their product portfolios.” - Jon Veldhouse, chief executive officer of Qore.
