While living in Switzerland, Stephanie Chui attempted to make a polenta pizza. The experiment failed, but never one to look at the negatives, Chui found her calling. Chui enjoyed the crispy edges so much she created Gourmais, a polenta-based cracker brand. Now, the native Angeleno is bringing it back home to LA markets. She said she chose to launch her business in LA for its familiarity and the expansion of her education.

Betsy Mendel fell in love with fitness in the ’80s during the age of Jane Fonda and step aerobics. Even more than the physical benefits, she loved how working out made her feel. After moving to Los Angeles from Atlanta, Mendel started her own personal training business. Of those plays, 52 were selected to be performed starting Aug. 5 with winners selected from a panel of professional judges and audience members who voted after each showing.

Seventeen years ago, Susan Priver and Henry Olek were two years into their marriage when they played a couple in Harold Pinter’s “A Slight Ache.” Now, the longstanding couple is returning to the classic work in a visiting production at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble that runs from Saturday, Aug. 26, through Sunday, Oct. 1. The Mar Vista Seniors Club will celebrate its 34th anniversary with a luau-themed party on Friday, Aug. 18, at Mar Vista Park. The cost is $10 in advance, reservations are required so organizers can have a headcount for the catered luncheon. Entertainment will be provided by the Hawaiian band Tropic Star.

After a three-year hiatus, the Culver City Summer Sunset Music Series returned July 27, but organizers are looking for a little help. Former Culver City Mayor Jim B. Clarke, the Culver City Arts Foundation chair, said, in bringing back the concerts, the nonprofit told city officials it would help raise $30,000 of the needed $60,000.
