Our founder, Billy Martin was recently inducted into the Birmingham Kiwanis/Birmingham Business Journal’s Business Hall of Fame. Mr. & Mrs. Martin started our company in Birmingham in 1977, and their leadership paved the way for MRG to become one of the largest automotive advertising agencies in the country. Though he passed away in 2008, Mr. Martin’s grandchildren, Hunter, Will, Michael, and their wives attended the award presentation.

Hoop Dreams - Documentary
Hoop Dreams focuses on 2 high school kids (Arthur Agee and William Gates) from inner-city Chicago, and their journey over the course of a 6-year period. Both are recruited to play at a prestigious private high school (where Isaiah Thomas played), and both have NBA dreams. The basketball content is obviously highly engaging and entertaining for some, but at the same time, the core of the movie is in the message - it shines a very bright light on some much larger subjects like competition, ambition, race, and class in our society.

Black Violin - Musicians
(Kevin Sylvester and Wilner Baptiste)
This Grammy-nominated- American hip-hop duo incorporates classical music into their craft. They are from Fort Lauderdale, FL. Black Violin is comprised of two classically trained string instrumentalists, Kevin Sylvester and Wilner Baptiste, who go by the stage names Kev Marcus and Wil B. Kev Marcus plays the violin, and Wil B. plays the viola. Seriously check them out, you won’t be disappointed. From the Grammy Nominated album, Take the Stairs.

Lovecraft Country
Misha Green pulls together an all-star cast that successfully tackles racism, classism, and historical fiction in a way that has never been done before. This show was the highlight of my Summer! As a sci-fi fantasy nerd, it’s rare to see myself reflected on TV as the main character in this genre. This series has monsters, time travel, suspense, and horror. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll root for these characters as they fulfill their hero’s journey. Favorite episode: #9 Rewind 1921.

I was 10 years old when the power of Lauren Hill's debut album rocked the walls of my family’s home. Before the term black girl magic was coined, Lauren Hill’s sultry feminist vibes encouraged a generation of women to claim their blackness and own their authentic selves. Lauren, a powerhouse with her pen and a force in the production booth, created an album that spans generations. Favorite songs from the album: Everything is Everything and Doo W*p (That Thing).

To continue our focus on black history and culture, we’re sharing some works our employees recommend.

Black Messiah is the 3rd studio album by D’Angelo and the first since his critically acclaimed Voodoo album. Originally slated for 2015, D’Angelo decided to release it in late 2014 due to that year’s controversial decisions in the Ferguson and Eric Garner cases. Rolling Stone (Rob Sheffield) hailed the record as an "Avant dream palace" and a "warm, expansive masterpiece". One of my favorite and deepest tracks on the album, “The Charade”, calls out the history of systematic racism ("All we wanted was a chance to talk/ ‘Stead we've only got outlined in chalk."). Other notable tracks include: Prayer and Betray My Heart. It was and still is in constant rotation in my house and one that everyone should give a listen to. If you haven’t done so I highly recommend it.

The Black Godfather. This first-person documentary from Clarence Avant includes testimony from people who knew him both professionally and personally. While it's impossible to chronicle everything he did, the documentary does a great job depicting the highlights. His story is one of a man, who against all odds, was loved by all sorts of people. Entertainers like Bill Withers, Sammy Davis, Jr. Sports heroes like Hank Aaron, political figures, and presidents. He helped so many people over the years. An influencer before influencers were a thing. He and Quincy Jones had the type of friendship you yearn for. His ideology about love and people will resonate with people as they watch the film.

Boom for Real is a biographical film that examines the life of African American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The documentary focuses on Basquiat’s teenage years and the time he spent living in the late-70’s / early-80’s New York City art scene. Jean-Michel Basquiat was an influencer before social media. He was a painter, poet, musician, and most of all thought provoker. This is an excellent documentary if you want to learn about Jean-Michel Basquiat’s formative years, what he had to overcome, and the wild things that were happening at that time in New York.
