I've worked remotely for almost six years now, three of which at Sentara.

And I've built some of the strongest professional relationships of my career without ever meeting people in person.

How?

Intentionality.

When you're in an office, connection happens by accident. The hallway chat. The lunch run. The random conversation by the coffee machine.

Remote work doesn't have that luxury.

So you have to CREATE those moments:

✅ Start meetings with actual conversation, not just agendas (as my supervisor does without fail)
✅ Remember details about people's lives and follow up
✅ Reach out when you DON'T need something (I found out one of my workmates is a film and anime buff like me and I'll ping him once in a while to chat about what's new)

The people I work with at Sentara feel like teammates, not strangers on a screen.

That didn't happen by accident.

It happened because we made it a priority.

Remote work can be isolating.

Or it can be deeply connected.

The difference is you.

One of the best business lessons I've learned didn't come from a book.

They came from my family.

From my wife: Partnership means showing up even when it's hard. Especially when it's hard.

From my son: Patience isn't optional. Growth takes time. Celebrate the small wins. (And don't forget to have fun in the process!)

From watching my parents: Hard work matters, but so does knowing when to rest.

Running a side hustle while raising a family forces you to get clear on what matters.

You can't do everything.

You can't be everywhere.

You have to choose.

And your choices reveal your real priorities.

I choose to be present for my kid's activities. (My son will remind me sometimes "Get off technology, dad!")

I choose to protect my family time (i.e., no phones or emails during 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.)

I choose to build something that serves my life, not the other way around.

Business advice is everywhere. Take it all in with a grain of salt.

But wisdom? That comes from the people closest to you.

Prioritize them.

Remote work gave me freedom.

It also gave me loneliness.

Rarely does anyone talk about that part.

When I first started working from home full-time, I loved it.

No commute.

Flexible schedule.

More time with my family.

But somewhere along the way, I realized I hadn't talked to another adult outside my household in days.

The isolation crept in slowly.

Here's what helped me break out of it:

🧡 Scheduled virtual quarterly meetups with colleagues
🧡 Joining communities outside of my job (like my amazing boxing peeps pictured here)
🧡 Getting out of the house, even just to work from a coffee shop
🧡 Finding hobbies like obstacle course racing (OCR) training for future events

Remote work is great power.

But like the Spider-Man saying goes, "With great power comes great responsibility."

You have a responsibility to protect your mental health.

You have a responsibility to seek connection.

You have a responsibility to be intentional.

The freedom isn't worth it if you're miserable.

Take care of yourself.

If you're running a small business and NOT using AI tools yet, let me save you some time.

Here are the ones I actually use with my freelance clients:

✅ Canva - Generate graphics, resize for every platform, create variations in seconds. I use this religiously.

✅ ChatGPT or Stanley - Draft emails, brainstorm content ideas, write first drafts. NEVER to replace your voice (always edit for your tone), but to speed up the process.

✅ Scheduling tools with AI optimization - They tell you WHEN to post based on your audience's behavior. No more guessing.

The key? Start with ONE tool.

Master it.

Then add another.

You don't need to overhaul everything overnight.

Small steps. Consistent progress.

LESS BURNOUT.

That's how you build something sustainable.

What AI tools are you using to help your business right now?

The best business decision I made as a freelance business owner?

Saying NO.

"NO" to projects that didn't align with my values.

"NO" to clients who wanted everything for nothing.

"NO" to opportunities that would have stretched me too thin.

When you're running a side hustle while working full-time, you learn fast: your time is your most valuable asset.

And every "yes" to the wrong thing is a "no" to the right thing.

I used to take on everything. Every project. Every request. Every "quick edit."

I was exhausted. My work suffered. My family time disappeared.

Now I ask myself one question before committing:

"Does this 'YES' move me closer to where I want to be?"

If the answer is no, the answer is NO.

Growth isn't always about adding more.

Sometimes it's about protecting what matters.

Choose wisely.

I don't always feel like training.

I don't always feel like writing content.

But I show up anyway.

That's the difference between motivation and discipline.

Motivation is a feeling. It comes and goes. Some days you're fired up. Other days you'd rather stay in bed.

Discipline is a decision. You do the thing regardless of how you feel.

I've learned this the hard way as a Gen X'er, but it fits any generation.

I teach these to my son so he learns as well:

💪🏾 The workout you don't feel like doing is usually the one you need most.

💪🏾 The post you don't feel like writing is usually the one that resonates.

💪🏾 The consistency you don't feel like maintaining is what separates you from everyone else.

I'm not the fastest at my Spartan races.

I'm not the strongest.

But I show up.

Every time.

And that's what allowed me to reach the top of the rope in the middle of the race after doing 10+ obstacles.

Same with my content.

Same with my clients.

Showing up is the strategy.

Everything else is just noise.
