How to Use Raised Stencils for a Vintage Look
Looking to add authentic depth and dimension to your projects? Raised stencils are the perfect way to create an old-world feel that looks beautifully timeworn. Here’s how to achieve this stunning effect:
1️⃣ Start with a Bold Base:
Paint your surface in a rich background color or patterned decoupage—like plaid or toile—to create visual interest behind your raised design.
2️⃣ Apply Your Raised Stencil:
Secure your stencil in place and spread texture medium or plaster over it with a palette knife. Smooth it evenly, then carefully lift the stencil away to reveal the raised design.
3️⃣ Let It Dry Completely:
This step is key! Make sure your raised stencil is fully dry before adding any additional layers or washes of color.
4️⃣ Add Color & Highlights:
Gently dry brush metallic paints, antiquing glazes, or soft neutrals over the raised areas. This makes every detail pop and creates that gorgeous vintage patina.
5️⃣ Blend & Distress:
Lightly sand the edges of your raised stencil if you’d like a more weathered, aged look. This helps the design blend seamlessly into the background.
🦌 Tip: Combine raised stencils with decoupaged images—like this handsome stag—to bring depth and story to your piece.
