Former Congressman Jerry Carl of Mobile has filed a statement indicating that he will run for his old seat.

Last year, Carl lost his reelection bid to U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise.

But Carl’s former seat could be coming open. Moore has said he is considering a run for the U.S. Senate seat that Tommy Tuberville is leaving to run for governor.

“The Democrats have to be serious about securing the border … you have to,” Figures told a crowd of business leaders Monday in Mobile, where he pushed a centrist message in a debate he said is often hijacked by political extremes.

Figures, a Mobile Democrat, turned to the room full of business leaders and told them that many of the same immigrants targeted by Trump-era crackdowns are likely working on their job sites.

He pointed to a June immigration raid at a Gulf Shores High School construction site where 37 undocumented workers were arrested, as an example of going too far.

About a year ago, a company announced plans to make a Mobile-themed version of Monopoly and invited local input. The resulting custom game was unveiled Thursday evening at the historic Malaga Inn.

The new game board puts “Mardi Gras” and “Bienville Square” as the premium Park Place and Boardwalk properties.

If the release of this game prompts a sense of déjà vu, the history of Monopoly and its various officially licensed or unofficially tolerated offshoots, ripoffs and parodies is vast.

Several groups in Baldwin County — gardeners, utilities, hotels, and more — are now providing the necessary milkweed habitat for the threatened butterflies.

Monarch City USA, an environmental group dedicated to preserving the butterflies, in June named Foley as the first “Monarch City” in Alabama.

And this month, the city got a new pollinator garden for the stunning orange and black butterflies at Riviera Utilities.

The owners of Fairhope Brewing Co. say that after a lengthy trial period, they’re ready to permanently plant their flag on St. Louis Street in downtown Mobile.

The decision comes as the city is set to begin a $17 million, block-by-block overhaul of the street’s infrastructure.

The work is expected to begin by late summer and continue for more than two years.

Pizza, politics, and campaign signs collided last week, leading to the sudden closure of a Gulf Shores pizza parlor.

The incident, now dubbed “Pizza Gate” on social media, has stirred controversy in the final weeks of the city’s heated mayoral race ahead of the Aug. 26 election.

At the center of the dispute: a clash over political signs outside L.A. Pizzeria.

Who would you like to see perform on the beach in Gulf Shores?

The city voted unanimously Monday night to make it possible for the Hangout Music Festival – or something broadly similar – to happen in 2026. Whether that event’s lineup has more in common with the eclectic pop lineups of recent Hangout Fests, or with the country-oriented slate of the Sand in My Boots fest held in 2025, remains to be seen.

Mobile police are investigating a chaotic brawl at Chuck E. Cheese on Saturday that, according to TV accounts, involved more than 20 people.

The ecological richness of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta has led some to refer to it as “America’s Amazon.”

On the opposite edge of Baldwin County, the Perdido River twists along 20 miles or so of mostly undeveloped territory, its winding path defining the Alabama-Florida state line.

Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a way to paddle through, or float down, these treasures, overnighting along the way in established campsites, secure in the knowledge that you aren’t trespassing and have permission to be where you are?
