After apprenticing under renowned chairmaker Tommy Bell, Harkins learned the intricacies of working with local woods and traditional techniques. His craftsmanship has gained national recognition, with pieces made for five U.S. presidents and even Pope John Paul II. At Mississippi State University, Puppies with a Purpose is changing lives by empowering students to raise service dogs in partnership with the Guide Dog Foundation. Since 2021, students have been training puppies before they head for formal training and eventually become service companions for those in need.
