Today we remember and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr Cynthia Thompson, a true trailblazer and, as many described her, simply “a great person.”

One of the first women to represent Jamaica at the Olympics, she became the first Jamaican, male or female, to contest an Olympic 100m final.

Her excellence continued beyond the track, where she went on to serve generations of Jamaican children as a respected and compassionate paediatrician.

In this episode of Jamaicans to the World, Xavier Murphy sits down with Amigga Smith, the powerhouse behind Cafe 876, JamDum Tours, and several Jamaican-owned initiatives bringing brand Jamaica to the DR.

Amigga shares her inspiring journey from Kingston to Puerto Plata — building a catering business, connecting Jamaicans across the Dominican Republic, hosting cultural events, and fighting for visibility for the Jamaican diaspora. She breaks down the challenges, opportunities, racial experiences, cultural blending, and why Jamaican food and products have huge potential in the DR.

A humanitarian crisis looms in Westmoreland, one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Melissa. According to the Member of Parliament for Eastern Westmoreland, Dr. Dayton Campbell, not a single community was spared, with homes flattened and thousands left displaced and struggling to recover.

In response, he has launched the Adopt-a-Family initiative — a targeted relief effort that connects verified families who lost everything with donors willing to help them rebuild their lives.

The goal is to support 1,500 displaced families with shelter, food, essential supplies, and, where needed, durable container homes. You can adopt a family, contribute to pooled sponsorships, donate supplies, or volunteer on the ground.

No amount is too small — every act of generosity helps restore dignity and stability.
