Today, on what would have been his 97th birthday, we honour Jamaican jazz genius whose fearless and non conforming approach to sound helped redefine modern jazz.

Joe Harriott’s story is one of blinding brilliance, bold experimentation, and a legacy that is only now getting the recognition it deserves.

Watch this rare video—the only known footage of Harriott performing—taken during a 1969 tribute to Duke Ellington. Then read our full article tracing his journey from Kingston to the cutting edge of jazz.

🇰🇾 Did you know the Cayman Islands was a dependency of Jamaica for 96 years?

📜 In 1863, Britain officially placed Cayman under Jamaican administration, extending its laws and courts to the islands.

Cayman remained tied to Jamaica until Jamaica’s independence in 1962, when it chose to become a direct British dependency instead.

Click link for the full timeline of Jamaica's and Cayman's historical relationship.

On July 4, 1959, the Cayman Islands ended their status as a Jamaican dependency and became a separate Crown Colony under direct British rule.

In today's 'the story of' feature we're exploring Seaford Town, the unusual heritage site tucked away in the hills of Westmoreland.

Also known as German Town it was Founded in the 1830s by German immigrants brought to the island after slavery ended, it was part of a larger plan to reshape Jamaica’s post-emancipation labour force.

Promised land, homes, and a better life, the settlers faced harsh conditions, disease, isolation, and a new culture they were unprepared for. Over time, they adapted—planting crops, building families, and slowly blending into Jamaican society. Though much of the language and tradition has faded, traces of their legacy still linger in the landscape, the surnames, and the annual Boxing Day Garden Party.
