Situated adjacent to the 300-acre San Joaquin Marsh Reserve, UCI Health's new acute care hospital in Irvine, Calif., stands as a testament to the organization's decarbonization goals. The 357,000-square-foot facility opened in December 2025 and is one of the first all-electric acute care hospitals in the U.S.

UCI Health partnered with CO Architects for architecture and interior design, along with HENSEL PHELPS as general contractor, while also collaborating with multiple trade partners and consultants.

When Nemours Children's Health decided to revamp its pediatric hematology and oncology unit in Wilmington, Del., the project team was asked to deliver a fundamentally different care environment without adding a single square foot.

A $19.6 million renovation, completed in March 2025 and submitted to the 2026 Healthcare Design Showcase by HDR, updates the 20,000-square-foot unit to better support clinical collaboration and patient comfort.

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital from ESa was recently added to Healthcare Design's Featured Firms section.

In 2020, Inova set out to define a new architectural identity, operational standard, and patient experience across its network. Inova Health Center – Oakville, a 4-story, 100,000-square-foot ambulatory care center in Alexandria, Va., represents the first phase of that multicampus initiative.

The project was completed in October 2024 and submitted to the 2026 Healthcare Design Showcase by Ballinger and Ennead Architects.

The 2026 Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) Code for Planning and Design of Hospitals, which was released this week, is the first edition to include minimum requirements for medical/psychiatry units.

Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., is undertaking a major campus expansion with the construction of an 11-story acute care tower.

Slated for completion in 2028, the 491,150-square-foot project utilizes an integrated project delivery (IPD)-lite process to align the project team, which includes architect and interior designer FCA and general contractor Turner Construction.

The new tower will transition the hospital to all-private patient rooms and grow the emergency department by 22 treatment areas, including three trauma bays and dedicated space for behavioral health patients. Additionally, the medical center tower will add 24 intensive care unit beds and six hybrid-capable operating rooms.
