Godspeed Todd Snider
 
We’re heartbroken having heard the news that Todd Snider has left us for the great gig in the sky.
 
His singular voice as a songwriter and recording artist always inspired us. As a person, he encouraged us to stay true to our humanity. We’ve lost a beautiful soul.
 
Todd was an early supporter and fan of The East Nashvillian. Indeed, he graced the cover more times than anyone. He was our north star and embodied the Eastside vibe. “Play a Train Song” became the neighborhood’s unofficial anthem and his album, “East Nashville Skyline,” its soundtrack. True to form, the headline accompanying his 2011 cover was “The Ambassador.”
  
Often mercurial and usually barefoot, Todd’s presence was unique and powerful. Life as lyricism. Nothing stood between him and his art. He was genuine in his intent and a master of his craft. Even his emails were poetic.
  
There will no doubt be eulogies written that contain lists of his accomplishments and musical friendships. But for Lisa and me, Todd’s loss feels personal. Our love for the man goes beyond our respect for the artist.
 
His support for us, what he represented to our community, and the mutual respect we shared, are the things that matter.
 
He was our friend, and friends with many people we know.
 
Lisa and I offer our deepest condolences to Todd’s family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved him. We share your grief.

HBD John Prine

A happy heavenly birthday to John Prine, born on this day in 1946.

The artwork by Scott Guion was commissioned for the 2018 Music Issue of The East Nashvillian. At the time, John and his wife Fiona were in Ireland where he was on tour. Staying true to using original images for our cover, we asked the gang at Oh Boy about going this route, and they gave us their blessing.

Whenever folks talk about ‘real’ Nashville, I always think of John Prine. He wasn’t from here but over time became part of the furniture, so to speak. Accessible and down to earth, he could often be found hanging out at Brown’s Diner day-drinking with his pals back in the day.

By the time this issue came out in 2018, he’d been discovered by a new generation of singer-songwriters who celebrated him as one of their own. It was truly lovely to see how they connected with his lyricism, and the straightforward, everyman atittude he brought to his songwriting.

Forever in our hearts. A true Nashville legend if there ever was one.

SAVE NASHVILLE PRIDE

Following Get OUT, Get LOUD: A Benefit for Nashville Pride at Marathon Music Works this past Sunday evening, Pride’s board of directors commented that the Save Nashville Pride campaign has been a “Monumental” success. 🏳️‍🌈

Thus far, over $145,000 has been raised towards covering the 2025 budget shortfall and funding for the 2026 Nashville Pride Parade & Festival.

WSM TURNS 100

Nicknamed “The Air Castle of the South,” WSM-AM 650 celebrates its 100th year of broadcasting today. The National Life and Accident Insurance Company founded the station in 1925 as a platform to sell its insurance products, and its call letters are derived from the company’s motto, “We Shield Millions.”

WSM is singular in its contribution to popularizing country music through its airing of the Grand Ole Opry, which is the longest-running radio program in history. The weekly Saturday night program, founded by journalist and radio announcer George Hay, began life as the WSM Barn Dance on Nov. 28, 1925. The first performer, an old-time fiddle player from Smith County, Tennessee named Uncle Jimmy Thompson, took requests from listeners.

After a performance of the train song “The Pan American Blues” by DeFord Bailey on Dec. 10, 1927, Hay remarked, “For the past hour, we have been listening to music taken largely from Grand Opera. From now on we will present the Grand Ole Opry.” Obviously, the name stuck.

In 1928, the Federal Radio Commission, the precursor to the FCC that had jurisdiction over radio licensing, implemented General Order 40, which provided WSM Tennessee’s sole clear channel allocation. Then, in 1932, the station boosted its power to 50,000 watts. In the days when radio was the only source of broadcast media, this gave WSM tremendous cultural influence.

WSM’s iconic, 808-foot diamond-shaped transmitting antenna in Brentwood has welcomed travelers to Nashville since 1932. Today, the station’s broadcast studio is in the home originally built for Roy Acuff on the grounds of the Grand Ole Opry House.

WSM marks the occasion of its 100th year with a very special Sunday Night Grand Ole Opry featuring artists who have called WSM home over the years: Pam Tillis, Charlie Worsham, Chuck Mead, Chris Scruggs & The Stone Fox Five; Elizabeth Cook, Dailey & Vincent, Tommy Emmanuel, and Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show.

Nashville Ballet celebrates the opening of its 40th season with “If I Can Dream” at TPAC’s Polk Theatre Oct. 10-12.

Choreographer Travis Bradley’s playful original work, “If I Can Dream,” is set to original recordings of Elvis Presley in this heartfelt homage to The King.

Paired with George Balanchine’s sparkling masterpiece, “Rubies,” and renowned choreographer Jiří Kylián’s “Un Ballo” — with music by Stravinsky and Ravel performed by Nashville Symphony — classical ballet is fused with rock & roll rhythm to illustrate the enduring power of dance.
