“But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14

Even though you may not sense this most of the time, your Lord is working in your life, your will, your desires, your mind, to change you. It’s a miracle, and He is committed to the process.

Your part of this process is also clear. Remember that obedience is an evidence that the Lord is working in your life. Commitment to your part of the change process looks like getting to know God through reading, studying, memorizing, meditating on, and applying His Word.

As you humbly respond to God’s Word and the Holy Spirit’s conviction, God changes you to become more like Jesus. But this change does not take place overnight. Change takes place over time. If you have harbored and nurtured bitterness in your heart for an extended period, it will take time to dig out the stubborn roots.
When you fail, what do you do? The answer is clear: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

If you fail, you get up out of the dirt and ask the Lord for forgiveness, and believe that He is committed to continuing to wipe the dirt off. Your job is to believe you have been forgiven and go back to obeying out of love for the Lord and others.

Gospel Help for Sports Betting and Addiction by Jim Newheiser:

Repeated sinful choices can become life-dominating. Addictions may even create a physical craving or dependency in some people. Scripture teaches that sin, including addiction, is primarily a spiritual problem of the heart (Mark 7:15–23; Proverbs 4:23). And because Scripture properly diagnoses the problem, it also offers hope for those who are enslaved. Thankfully, God’s Word reveals how we can be set free through union with Christ. You aren’t destined to be an addict. Change is possible. But because God made your body to be a servant to your heart, overcoming addictive behaviors must begin by addressing your heart, not merely addressing your wrong behaviors. The good news is that God transforms our hearts through His Word:

Psalm 19:7–8 "The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes."

Did you notice what this psalm says about God’s Word? Addiction begins with believing lies, but God’s Word has the power to open your eyes. Addiction leads to spiritual, emotional, and physical harm, but God’s Word leads to life. Addictions are enslaving, but God’s Word offers hope that captives can be set free. As God renews your heart through His Word, over time your thoughts, desires, and choices can begin to reflect Christlike responses.
