Always wondered why we had to have bobcat tagged. Here is the answer!
January and February are considered by many to be the peak months for predator calling. Have you ever wondered why bobcats must be tagged by any game warden or ODWC wildlife biologist and not other predator species, like coyotes and foxes? It's because the North American bobcat, although not endangered at all, looks nearly identical to the Mexican bobcat, which is on the Endangered Species List and found primarily in Baja, western Mexico, and southward from the Sonoran Desert. Any bobcat harvested in Oklahoma is assuredly not a Mexican bobcat. Having your Oklahoma-harvested bobcat tagged proves by its location of harvest that it is not an endangered Mexican bobcat, and therefore legal to be sold on the open market. Coyotes and gray and red foxes don't resemble any other endangered species, so it's not necessary to prove where they were harvested prior to being sold.
