Have you ever thought, “I’m trying my best to do what God desires—pray, study, serve, worship. So why does it feel rote at times?” When reading about people like David, Daniel, and Mary, we want our relationship with the Lord to be vibrant like theirs. But for many believers, something seems to be missing. More accurately, what seems to be missing is a Someone, as Dr. Stanley himself learned while in seminary.

His book The Spirit-Filled Life chronicles how a fellow student used scriptures to explain the Holy Spirit is not simply a force but a person we can and should get to know. Here are a few excerpts that describe this essential gift from God to every Christian:

“The Holy Spirit ... is a thinking, feeling person acting in perfect unity with God the Father and God the Son to work His perfect will out in our lives. But He is more than a person. He is part of that mysterious entity we call the Trinity.”

“Do you talk to the Holy Spirit? ... He is a person just like Christ, ... sent by the Father to assist you in all the practical matters of Christian living. He is your number one Helper. [So] get to know Him. Talk to Him. Thank Him.”

“The Holy Spirit convicts, illuminates, teaches, guides, assures, intercedes, directs, warns ... [and] is doing His work in your life every day ... When you know what to look for and when [to] look for it, you will be amazed at how real [He] will become to you.”

With your own words or the following prayer based on John 14:16-17, thank God for such a tremendous gift, and ask to know His Spirit better: “Thank You, Father, for the remarkable, ever-present blessing of Your Holy Spirit. Make me sensitive to His promptings and responsive to His instructions. And grow my faith as I rely on His guidance. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

If we have any illusions about how following Jesus guarantees cozy comfort and safety, this description in Luke 4 should send a chill down our spine: the Spirit led Him “into the wilderness . . . [to be] tempted by the devil” (vv. 1-2 NIV).

The event of Jesus’ wilderness temptation is more than a story about His individual standoff with Satan. It’s more than an explication of helpful tips on overcoming our desires. It is an announcement of the cataclysmic fact that in Jesus Christ, God has already leveled the lethal blow. Jesus is Lord even over temptation and is powerfully present with us even in the wild and wicked places.

This means that whenever we find ourselves drawn into the onslaught of temptation or despair (or however our wilderness manifests itself), God is already there ahead of us. In the very places where we most fear His absence, God’s love greets us, inviting us towards Himself. Divine love holds us in the dark and summons us into the light.

We are mistaken if we think our skirmishes with sin are fundamentally about our willpower or spiritual fortitude. The truth is, our affairs with sin are fundamentally a story about God and His grace, kindness, and might. If, in our places of temptation, we are left to ourselves while God sits in the corner waiting to see how well we come through, then we truly are doomed. However, we are not left to ourselves. God is not in the wings waiting. He has acted decisively in Jesus Christ, who confronted Satan in the wilderness and again on the cross. Whenever we find ourselves in the darkness, we discover Jesus Christ already there, wearing a smile and a victor’s crown.
