A long-time Alabama personality and businessman is joining an elite group whose ranks include the likes of Bob Hope, James Brown, Larry King and Ryan Seacrest.

Shelley Stewart, whose decades long career includes broadcasting, public relations and philanthropy, is among the latest class of inductees into the Radio Hall of Fame.

The honor comes from the Chicago-based Museum of Broadcast Communications.

“It means that I’ve done something right somewhere along the way,” he said. “I’m really honored. Hopefully the people of Birmingham will understand that nothing is impossible.”

The University of Montevallo is raising tuition, laying off staff and removing some academic programs as it works to address a multimillion dollar budget shortfall.

The small public college, founded in 1896, has been running a deficit for at least four years.

For the first time in seven years, there will be a tuition increase for incoming students in August 2025. Rates will go up 3.5% from $403 per credit hour to $417 per credit hour for undergraduates.

Jabari Peoples was shot June 23 while he and a female friend were sitting inside a vehicle at Homewood Soccer Park.

Leroy Maxwell, who represents the family of the slain 18-year-old, said Monday he dispatched an investigator to conduct a detailed charting of Peoples’ body.

Accused mass killer Damien McDaniel says he is not the person the world is trying to portray him to be.

In a lengthy statement posted on the 22-year-old’s page, a statement that appears to be from McDaniel says he is a “man of God” with no reason to lie.

Instead, McDaniel stated it was police, prosecutors and others who have lied in his cases. “They say I’m the monster but they’re the ones who are wicked and abuse their power because they want to oppress us,” the Facebook post states.

Emma Terry of Leeds is the new Miss Alabama.

The UAB grad competed as Miss Hoover and was crowned Saturday night by Miss America Abbie Stockard, who was the 2024 Miss Alabama winner.

“I am on top of the world,” Terry told AL.com after her win. “I can’t believe it. I have had this dream since I was 14 years old, and it’s surreal. I’m so honored, so blessed."

Preliminary events at the Miss Alabama Competition have wrapped up, and a new Miss Alabama will be crowned tonight.

Emma Terry won the talent preliminary on Friday. Evie Smith and Hannah Adams tied in the evening gown preliminary.

Brian K. Rice is the latest to launch a campaign to lead the city and challenge incumbent Mayor Randall Woodfin in the Aug. 26 election.

Rice describes himself as a community advocate rather than an activist.
