Acknowledged by their community for their spiritual and cultural knowledge, Elders carry wisdom, life experience, and years of learned teachings. They serve as advisors, teachers, leaders, and mentors, playing a critical role in preserving traditions and ensuring cultural continuity. The National Gathering of Elders Kanata (NGEKanata) recognized the need for a dedicated platform for Elders’ voices—a place for them to intermingle with like-minded, similarly aged individuals and their families, while also providing opportunities to bridge the generational gap by connecting with youth.

An Urban Rez Production, Petroglyphs to Pixels, is a documentary series exploring how thoughts and ideas lead to art creation—a distinctly human impulse since the beginning of time. The series is the brainchild of Urban Rez Productions’ co-founder Jeff Bear Maliseet (Wolastoq) from New Brunswick and colleague Marianne Jones, Haida from Skidegate, Haida Gwaii. Bear’s career spans over 30 years of storytelling in various forms of digital media, with his focus on Indigenous sources as his expertise, including the critical voices of our times.

LEANNE HUVENAARS T2 DENTAL AND TISDALE DENTAL HYGIENE CLINIC – TISDALE, SASKATCHEWAN

The waiting room is bright and inviting as Leanne Huvenaars proudly explains the T2 Dental and Tisdale Dental Hygiene Clinic Ltd business model. They are full-service dental clinics with two owners: a dentist and a hygienist. “It’s not usually composed like that, but we’re changing the way dentistry works and how the business model is constructed.”

When Leanne was studying dental hygiene, she discovered independent practice. At the time, no hygienists were operating their own storefronts in Saskatchewan; hygienists must have a contract with a dentist to operate, and generally, the dentist already owns the business. “I wanted a storefront, so back in 2003, I said, ‘I will be the first storefront hygiene clinic in Saskatchewan.’” To achieve this goal, twelve years ago, Leanne partnered with another hygienist, and they rented space to a dentist who supported her business model. In 2021, Leanne bought out her hygienist business partner and is now an equal partner with a dentist.

LOREENA SEYMOUR MOUNT PAUL BARBERS – KAMLOOPS, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Several transformations occur at Mount Paul Barbers. Men walk into the barbershop looking unkempt, yet they leave feeling confident and well-groomed. Mount Paul Barbers is located on Tk’emlups te Secwepemc reserve in Kamloops, British Columbia. This iconic barbershop is Loreena Seymour’s pride and joy.

Loreena started her career as a stylist in a high-end hair salon in Kamloops, then rented a chair in a barbershop in Salt Spring Island, gaining experience in high-end hair styling and detail-oriented men’s barbering. In 2021, after starting at Mount Paul Barbers, she learned that the owner wanted to sell the business. “I already knew what it was like to rent a chair from a business owner. I wanted to learn the role of management as well. So, I jumped on the opportunity to buy the barbershop.”
