Community Grieves the Passing of Camille “Sove Je” Merilus and Georges Daniel

South Florida’s Haitian community is mourning two beloved leaders lost within weeks. Camille “Sove Je” Merilus—born August 17, 1947—passed away on August 22, 2025. A tireless advocate for the blind and visually impaired, he was a frequent voice on Haitian radio, promoting eye health, mental health, and healthier living. His funeral was held Friday, September 12, 2025, at Haitian Evangelical Baptiste Church in North Miami.

Days later, the community lost Georges Toussaint Daniel (born March 4, 1936), who died Wednesday morning, September 10, 2025. Widely respected for decades of community service, his passing was shared publicly by activist and social worker Dr. Flore Lindor. Funeral services are set for Friday, September 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., at Serenity Funeral Home & Cremation, 1450 S. State Road 7, North Lauderdale, FL 33068.

Together, their consecutive departures in August and September 2025 mark a period of profound loss—and renewed appreciation for lives spent in service, and advocacy.

City of Miramar Marks 24th Anniversary of September 11; U.S. Army Veteran Wilner Valcin Among Those Recognized

The City of Miramar held a solemn ceremony at Miramar Regional Park to mark the 24th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Hosted by Mayor Wayne Messam and the City Commission, the program featured reflections, a moment of silence, and tributes to American veterans. Dignitaries, law enforcement, community leaders, and residents gathered to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost and reaffirm the city’s commitment to unity and resilience. Among those recognized was Haitian-American U.S. Army veteran Wilner Valcin, a longtime Miramar resident and respected community figure whose banner has been on display at the park since the commemoration and who will receive a replica keepsake at the Nov. 5 commission meeting. The event concluded at the city’s new 9/11 Memorial, where attendees reflected quietly and celebrated the service of those who continue to defend the nation.

MJD Wellness and Community Center, founded in 2015 by Emmanuella Fleurimont in North Miami, has become a pillar of support for underserved and marginalized communities in Miami-Dade County. Over the past decade, the nonprofit has provided food assistance, health programs, education, and empowerment services to thousands of families, embodying a mission rooted in compassion and resilience. From its formative leadership luncheon in 2018—where civic and business leaders offered guidance on building a durable nonprofit—to its present-day role as a trusted safety net and springboard, MJD has consistently bridged gaps in health and wellness access. As the organization celebrates its 10th anniversary with a three-day series of events this October, including a benefit gala, wellness conference, and community festival, it honors the leaders, volunteers, and everyday champions who made this milestone possible while inviting the wider community to join in shaping the next decade of impact.

Montreal has unveiled five station names for the $7.6-billion Blue Line extension to the east end—about six kilometres of new tunnel slated for completion in 2031—using the network itself to honor the city’s communities and builders. At its center is Station Vertières (Jean-Talon E & Pie-IX), commemorating the 1803 battle that secured Haiti’s independence and saluting Montreal’s Haitian community, long rooted in Saint-Michel. The remaining stations—Mary Two-Axe-Earley, Césira-Parisotto, Madeleine-Parent, and Anjou—pay tribute to Indigenous leadership, Italian immigrant institution-building, labor and feminist activism, and the local borough, weaving immigrant heritage and civic identity into the daily experience of transit.

Blue Line extension celebrates Haitian heritage: Vertières station and more recognize the community’s lasting impact on Montreal.

Forced to Leave: Over 115,000 Haitians Flee the Dominican Republic in 2025 Amid Rising Hostility

In 2025, over 115,000 undocumented Haitians have voluntarily left the Dominican Republic due to mounting immigration pressure, according to the DGM. August alone saw 20,586 departures, alongside 250,741 deportations since January. While authorities describe the process as safe and orderly, rights groups say intensified enforcement and discriminatory barriers leave Haitians little real choice but to leave.
