I'm shiner fishing Headwaters Lake near Vero Beach, FL with my special "green" friend, Mike Wisecarver and his buddy Dan! Mike has developed boat washes and hull cleaners that the EPA certifies for direct release! In other words, you can legally wash your boat at the ramp without any environmental effects! Totally green!
The 3-7 pound bass are really bitting big golden shiners both on floats and with free lines so we are going to show you some great techniques.

(Part 2) TOM MANN’S THINK LIKE a BASS
———————————————————-
The legendary Eufaula, Alabama angler Tom Mann is best remembered as the creator of the
flavor-scented, soft plastic Jelly Worms. Does taste make a difference to a largemouth bass in feeding? How about a fondness for a particular flavor? We asked the late lure makers for his opinion.
“That’s a toughie for me to try to reason with,” he admitted. “After all I am the feller that made the scented worm craze.” True, over the years bass have gobbled up thousands of fake wiggles impregnated with a taste of strawberry, blackberry, watermelon and blueberry, but as to whether bass chose a strawberry red over a sweet-tasting blackberry is scientifically unproven.” Mann explained this in an interview planned for a book, but with the sudden passing of Tom the manuscript “Learn To Think, Act Like A Bass” went unpublished.
What he did feel strongly is “bass sure prefer a super soft worm texture over a hard rubber worm. Which flavor a bass will pounce on is almost impossible to get a fisherman to test out. “If they’re biting on strawberry, bet your last dollar they will not tie on a watermelon green to test the theory.”
At a B.A.S.S. Seminar the question about a largemouth’s taste-testing ability was asked of Tom. He somewhat dodged the answer by asking fellow seminar speaker, Bill Dance, “Just how would you answer ?”
On the spot Dance quipped, “Not a problem. Have confidence. Believing in what I’m doing helps my bass fishing success most times. Confidence is one of the best lures you can theoretically put in your tacklebox; not a magic mixes or potent potions.”
“Amen to that’s a truthful answer,” echoed Mann. “Think positive. But, sometimes it ain’t a sin to grab a flavored Jelly Worm and it can’t hurt!”
Bigmouth Bass certainly have a sense of smell. Some bass anglers smell bad and “turn bass off”. The amino acid known as “serine”, which humans expire, repels fish. A sweaty fisherman handles a lure and the smell is transmitted to the point bass may be gun shy. To mask the human scent anise or cod liver oils are used as lure dips. Salt, also, is used widely by soft plastic lure makers. The salty taste may serve to a fish holding a bait longer.
Leave it to suggest certain smells or tastes may be disagreeable to Mr. Lunker, but most things are not. The largemouth bass will eat, or try to gobble up, anything that swims. It is common to find a soda can’s pop-top lid in the stomach of a fish.
Fishing lure manufacturers, like Berkley Lures, have scientific proof. Studies reveal that bass can see and distinguish different colors. Controlled experiments have shown that red and green are best seen, while yellows and blues appear more as grays. Tom Mann in tests at his Fishing World on the banks of Lake Eufaula divers learned that the color red was first to loose its brightness underwater. Within a few feet under the surface, bright red gradually changed to brown and finally to gray.
As Tom Mann realized what bass anglers need to strive for in lure selection is not color so much as CONTRAST. “This is why dark or black lures are effective on overcast days or in stained water conditions. And, why brighter colored lures are most successful in clear water and bright sunny days to provide the greatest contrast in the water and light conditions .
Besides water clarity to consider, be alert to changing weather patterns. “Be in harmony with the cloud cover,” pointed out Mann, “and modify lure color selections.” In comparing notes with Bill Dance on dealing with lure colors and light conditions he recalled a specific situation.
Dance related catching bass from a 15-foot drop on several casts with a blue plastic worm. Then the cloud cover changed. The bite went cold. Dance recounted switching from blue to a black color worm after the clouds blotted out the bright sun, and the bite picked-up again. Amazingly, when the clouds passed, the reverse was true for the blue color. An oddity? An isolated happening? Or as Tom Mann believed “being in tune with conditions and knowing bass behavior.”
In Part 3 of “Learn To Think, Act Like A Bass” Tom Mann’s lesson planner includes the answers to “how often do bass feed” and his discussion on the Solunar Theory that effects the bass behavior pattern as it conforms to the cycle of sun and moon.
10 minutes of fishing, and already better than Watts Bar…

JAWS!
If you’re a bird, minnow, snake, frog or turtle this then the scariest thing out there is a Florida LARGEmouth bass! This aptly-named species has a mouth that is literally bigger than its stomach and has been known to gobble up almost any critter to cross its path. While this may spread fear on the water, it is the delight of anglers who enjoy fooling bass on a wide variety of lures including wild-looking “creature baits” that don’t resemble any living animal. If there’s a fish for Halloween, it’s Florida’s favorite freshwater game fish, the bass!
