📖 Sunday Tafseer Reflections at ISB | Surah Al Humazah

Every Sunday evening, our resident scholar Shaykh Ismet Akcin leads a beautiful journey through the Qur’an — beginning with recitations from our huffaz (Qur’an memorizers), followed by an in-depth tafsīr (Qur’anic explanation).

This reflection was on Sūrah al-Humazah, a powerful chapter revealing the dangers of arrogance, gossip, and belittling others. Shaykh Ismet broke down its origin story, context of revelation, and the spiritual lessons we’re meant to take from it — reminding us that true success lies not in wealth or status, but in humility and sincerity before Allah.

Join us every Sunday at ISB as we continue exploring the Qur’an together — deepening our understanding, building community, and strengthening our connection to Allah. 🌙

🎨 Outside the Classroom with

Today I had the chance to sit in briefly on Gaia’s drawing class — and it’s nothing like your typical art school session. Beyond being an internationally recognized muralist, Gaia now teaches at (his alma mater), where he’s been leading drawing and professional development courses for the past few semesters.

What makes his approach stand out is how alive it is. Instead of staying confined to a studio, he takes his students out into the world — walking to local art stores to learn about tools and resources, heading over to Baltimore’s iconic Graffiti Alley to explore scale and movement, and guiding them through hands-on sessions where they swap pencils for rollers and buckets of paint.

It’s an unorthodox but refreshing way to bridge classroom theory with street-level experience — teaching students how to think big, create large, and dream beyond the paper. They also dive into wheat-pasting and other public art techniques, learning not just how to make art, but how to live it.

In a time when many art schools have become overly academic, Gaia’s teaching reminds students what art education should feel like — curious, communal, and connected to the world around them.

Sitting at the crossroads of Gay Street, Oliver, and Johnston Square communities — right off Caroline & Biddle — this new mural tells a quiet but powerful story of persistence and renewal.

Originally a challenging wall that nearly went unpainted due to electrical lines, a growing tree, and a steep incline, took a chance in the dark — reaching out to see if any artist could take it on.

Fresh off completing two murals in Johnston Square (one honoring the old Yellow Bowl Restaurant and another featuring a floral and waterfall landscape), and accepted the challenge.

Despite delays, malfunctioning lift, stolen paint, and spills, they pushed through and transformed the wall into something special — a minimalist sunrise stretching across Baltimore rowhomes. Usually a 2-week project, this one took nearly 3-4, but every obstacle shaped its meaning.

The mural rests on a street that perfectly catches both sunsets and sunrises — fitting, since it symbolizes calm after hardship, and finding beauty in simplicity.

Over the last month and a half, this marks the third mural in Johnston Square, continuing a creative collaboration that began last year between local artists and ’s neighborhood revitalization efforts.

ReBUILD Metro has been rebuilding East Baltimore one block at a time for nearly two decades — restoring homes, empowering residents, and creating spaces where art, community, and history meet.

🎨 About the artist:
is a Baltimore-born muralist known worldwide for his public works exploring community, memory, and urban transformation.

Together, they remind us that even in complex situations, it’s okay to pause — take it easy — and appreciate the simplicity of a new dawn. 🌇
