The suspected shooter has been identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national. He is in custody and currently hospitalized after being shot during the incident.
The attack occurred near the Farragut Square Metro station in Washington D.C., close to the White House. Lakanwal allegedly ambushed the two guardsmen, who were on patrol, using a .357 revolver. He reportedly took a victim's weapon and continued firing before a third guardsman returned fire, ending the attack.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced charges against Lakanwal for assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, noting that charges could be upgraded if the victims do not survive.
The FBI is treating the incident as an attack on federal law enforcement officers and investigating it as a possible act of terrorism. Search warrants were executed at Lakanwal's home, and electronic devices were seized. Lakanwal is reportedly not cooperating with authorities.
The Trump administration has indefinitely paused processing immigration applications for Afghan nationals to review security protocols.
