Officials with the Arc of Loudoun have submitted a revised proposal to remain at the current Paxton Campus location for the 2025-26 school year, and the trustees of the Margaret Paxton Memorial for Convalescent Children in Leesburg are reviewing it, according to a spokesperson for the trustees.

The news comes after The Arc of Loudoun’s CEO Lisa Max told the Times-Mirror in an Aug. 9 email that the Paxton trustees had dispatched a security service and a locksmith to the campus with instructions to change all exterior door locks and padlock the front and back gates.

Months after plans for a new transmission line in Western Loudoun were scrapped, a different project is in the works.

At a public meeting in Lovettsville Aug. 12, utility company FirstEnergy laid out its plan to tear down and rebuild existing infrastructure in Western Loudoun, adding a new line to carry more energy. The line being replaced runs through Loudoun, Frederick and Clarke counties in Virginia, and Jefferson County in West Virginia.

Dozens of local residents filled the Lovettsville Volunteer Fire Hall, poring over maps and speaking with representatives from FirstEnergy. Stations around the room offered information on engineering and construction, environmental impact, vegetation management, project need and more.

In 2011, Purcellville business owners Scott Kinney of Shamrock Music Shoppe and Michael Oaks of Re-Love It launched a local tradition on 21st Street known as the Summer Block Party.

It was held for many years — and evolved into the Halloween Block Party — until the pandemic in 2020. In 2021, Oaks coordinated an end-of-summer party through his nonprofit Discover Purcellville, but 21st Street has not hosted an event since then.

After a four-year hiatus, the summer block party returns on Aug. 23, thanks to a community effort led by the nonprofit Purcellville Main Street.

Amanda Dayton, president of Purcellville Main Street, said the idea behind the free, family-friendly event is to encourage visitors to come to the area around Main and 21st Streets, spend time with friends and family and build community spirit. The event runs from 4 to 10 p.m.

“We have the support of all the business owners on 21st Street,” she said. “They want to make sure the sense of community returns to the downtown area. This is an opportunity to have a family-friendly event and protect that sense of nostalgia this town has to offer. This is the magic that we have here.”

The Loudoun County School Board is defying the Trump administration's demand they rescind their policy allowing transgender students to choose which bathroom and locker rooms they use.

After an approximately 90-minute closed session at their Aug 12 meeting, board members voted to have a law firm representing Loudoun County Public Schools respond to the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Right's July 25 finding demanding it rescind the policy.

“The Trump Administration will not sacrifice the safety, dignity, and innocence of America’s young women and girls at the altar of an anti-scientific illiberalism,” acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor said in a news release announcing the finding.

For the second year, Loudoun is experiencing an uptick in the population of the invasive spotted lanterfly, an insect that is drawn to tree-of-heaven, grapevines, orchards and ornamental native trees like the red maple, according to Mike Littman, president of the Loudoun Invasive Removal Alliance.

To learn more about an invasive plant removal program, the public is invited to attend one of two upcoming information sessions:

• Aug. 27 from 6-8 p.m. at The Barn at Brambleton

• Sept. 9 from 6-8 p.m. at Bluemont Vineyard

Purcellville Mayor Chris Bertaut has scheduled a special town council meeting for 6 p.m. Aug. 13, according to a Friday afternoon news release.

But three council members — Caleb Stought, Kevin Wright and Erin Rayner — are raising objections about the necessity of holding a last-minute meeting during the council's August recess.

On the agenda are three action items: initiation of search for an interim town manager, adoption of the draft strategic plan and a public hearing on changes to tourism codes.

Also slated for discussion are a revision to the town council policy and procedures manual and public meeting conduct policy, revision to the employee handbook regarding attorney reimbursement rates, and traffic mitigation improvements in Valley Springs.
