It dawned on me that perhaps the medium that Esau (Mark) used in his art warrants some explanation.

Wax resist is the term used when a layer of wax is put on the paper first, then ink is washed over it. The wax acts as a barrier to the paper and ‘resists’ the ink absorbing into it.

Esau loved heavy texture in his art, so this medium worked well for him. In the pictures below, you can see that the paper he chose (thin sheets of newspaper) was placed over the top of diamond plating in this case (extra texture!), then he drew the subject (Boise’s skyline) over that with crayons. Lastly, he added a light amount of black India ink over the top of that.

Voila!

The charity that I am choosing to give to has become very special to me for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, it is in support of the Special Olympics. I am a huge sports fan and believe that SO much good has come out of children and adults being involved in sports. I also believe that this does not have to stop because of physical or mental differences.
Secondly, Alegria Animal Assisted Therapeutic Center is where my sister, Katy, teaches horsemanship lessons and leads the Equestrian Special Olympics team! I was able to visit Alegria in October and meet Juliette (owner) and watch Katy work her magic. It was such a fun day! I am proud to support them both and the Olympians they are creating. Go, Team Alegria!

“Quasi-Polygonal Tessellate” is image 3 of 3 available for print orders!

Esau (Mark) was greatly influenced by Mid-Century Modern Art. Much of his art is a direct reflection of that period, while other works show subtle hints at it. He drew great inspiration from the likes of Calder, Eames, and Mondrian.

He was also strongly drawn to the beauty of math (yes, I said, beauty). He thoroughly enjoyed studying Voronai, Mandelbrot, Penrose/Escher, as well as Fibonacci - all of whom are credited for ‘fathering’ things such as Tessellate images, ‘The Golden Spiral’/Fibonacci Sequence, and Fractals - all forms of infinitely repeating patterns - all driven by mathematical formulas.

Fractals are my favorite ‘mathematical beauty’ - but this piece of Mark’s art is my favorite!

Anyone who knew Mark knew that despite his rough background (including a very short, long-ago stay in jail) and some early unhealthy life choices, he was working extremely hard at making the best version of himself that he could be. He was the first to admit that he was not even close to perfect, but he was growing and healing all the time.
Not only did he push himself, but he also pushed me, inspired me, and yes, pi**ed me off-often-haha, yet he loved me into a much better version of myself as well.

He just had that way about him. He loved you where you were, but also loved you enough to urge you to become better - not to become someone else, just a better you.

By nature, Esau had a generous heart. He was the recipient of assistance on many occasions, therefore, he knew the value of giving back as well.

In one conversation with him, I remember watching him express compassion for people who were in jail for more than a few days.
For example, they are given a limited supply of toiletries, most of which ran out long before they needed to appear in court. We were both moved by that lack and often, their humiliation of having to appear before a judge without the ability to prepare themselves aesthetically.

As we talked, he said that if he had the ability, he would make a donation to a general commissary fund for anyone who needed access to these basics.

So, in honor of Mark’s desire to reach ‘the least of these’ as the Bible put it, I will be donating a portion of the sales of his fine art to help those in need at the Ada County Jail in Boise, ID.

💫💫💫It’s that time again!💫💫💫

“Ancient Statue Carving’ is image 2 of 3 available for print orders!

Esau (Mark) was fascinated by historical artifacts and anything unusual. He enjoyed creating beauty from the simple. It was one of the most endearing things about him (in my humble opinion, anyway!).
He captured all of those elements in this unique piece!
