Congratulations to Chris of Seacoast Mushrooms and gratitude to the Westport Farmers' Market for supporting CT’s veteran farmers.

Congratulations to WFM farmer Chris Pacheco of Seacoast Mushrooms on being named the SBA’s Veteran Owned Small Business of the Year in Connecticut!

“Seacoast Mushrooms is a gourmet mushroom farm in Mystic celebrating its 10 year anniversary this year! Seacoast Mushrooms grows varieties of mushrooms naturally found in Connecticut woodlands, including shiitake, blue oysters, pink oysters, lion’s mane, and maitake to name a few, with occasional additions of other varieties.

Mushroom farming is still a relatively young industry in the United States and has been a learning journey for Chris. He noted that, “It is very humbling to partner and compete with mother nature when it comes to growing mushrooms. It’s a healthy relationship in that she lets us think we are in control with our environmentally controlled grow rooms and then, just like other types of farming, she lets us know that she runs the show.”

Chris is a Navy submarine Veteran whose service brought him and his wife, Laura, to CT, the submarine capital of the world, 25 years ago. Chris served as an officer aboard the mighty USS Hartford (fast attack submarine, SSN 768) where he made multiple deployments leading up to and following September 11th. On being a CT Farmer Veteran, Chris said, “For me, being a farmer is all about connecting with the communities in which we serve… The people in our community took a chance on our farm and chose to add our mushrooms to their diets and as a result, we exist. We literally feed hundreds of families here in CT and are supported by restaurants across the state.” ~ CT Veteran Grown

A read for us all today. Thank you Mark Bittman.

If you subscribe to the Bittman Project, my guess is that you do so, at least in part, because you're interested in what I have to say. And the following is something I just have to say, even though it’s hardly food-related. So it might bother you; on the other hand, you might love it. And it’s ...

Many farmers and vintners in our territory of coverage—Fairfield, Litchfield and New Haven counties—sustained crop losses and soil degradation from the storm now declared by FEMA as a natural disaster area. Their only recourse is to take out interest-bearing loans to support their businesses. While the loans are helpful in the short-term, they put the burden of the climate crisis on our food and drink producers. We need to do better for our Connecticut farmers.

For our readers who asked for ways to help the Ashville community.
Thank you.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, many beloved Asheville and Buncombe County businesses have been deeply affected by the storm. While the community comes together to rebuild, you can lend a helping hand from afar by shopping at these businesses' online stores or contributing to fundraising efforts.

It was a packed house at the Fairfield County Farm Bureau’s Annual Meeting, held at Jones Family Farms last night. The need for long-awaited policies and support for CT’s farmers suffering crop losses, infrastructure damage and income loss from extreme weather events were topics of primary concern. Farmland conservation priorities were also addressed by local leaders and Aspetuck Land Trust.
