People have asked me how, and sometimes why, I create the images of the creatures who populate my books. Thanks to a confluence of happy accidents, today I can hand you a snorkel and take you on a deep dive into the colorful recesses of my squishy brain.

Also, a huge shout-out to all the people who helped me pull this together. Just when I'm wondering if anyone's paying attention, over a hundred peeps showed up for a cyber-potluck. And every dish was tasty AF.

When the gen-0-pod (TM) wars erupted, Russia was building a new form of illegal AIs that were meant to be peaceful and used solely for scientific research. Only two survived. They were lovingly named Boris and Natasha and put in stasis to safely wait until humans could put down the rebellion. While we're waiting on the release of the Epstein files, there are a couple of things I have had to deal with that I feel I should address to a broader audience.

1) The Brittle Riders is not a documentary.
2) Goptri of the Mists is not a unique look at Hinduism.
3) None of the images of creatures used in my book promotions are photographs.

When I was first designing the Pravda for Goptri of the Mists, I had to consider a few things. Mostly, looked at logically, all spaceships should be cubes like the Borg. There is no air resistance in space. But, we're not Borg. I looked at several Soviet-era concepts for ships designed around scientific exploration.

Fun note, most I found could easily be retrofitted into military ships. The same held true for any country's spaceship concepts I found. Space: the final front lines.

Thus, when the cybers discovered the Pravda in orbit, five hundred years after the death of humanity, it was a simple science vessel loaded with enough weapons to level a planet and tons of spy gear that would make the CIA swoon.

The Kleknar were the first non-human characters I created, and I had no idea what to do with them. My first thought was to incorporate them by reference, as in, "it would be so weird if the Kleknar were still alive." But that seemed a waste. Book II opened an opportunity, and I never looked back. They had been developed with an ability to control autism, and have keen senses that they can enhance at will and are deadly shots. They also have a twisted sense of humor and the ability to turn almost anything into an explosive.

Kleknar make boom is your new favorite motto.

The cybers main, along with Boris and Natasha, are some of the more fun characters I've ever created. Assumed to be anti-organic homicidal maniacs with a dictatorial bend, they're really just lonely and misunderstood. Their story spans centuries and galaxies. Since the nature of sapience seemed like a common topic, although I do address it, I felt the essence of self was more interesting, so I created a transgender android. And I didn't make them pink.

I was attempting to show humans using chimeras for blood sport. I tried gladiator stuff and it all looked like furries cosplaying Russel Crowe. Not quite what I wanted. Wrestling, minus some leaping moves, tended to look like man-on-man love when targeted to a single frame. Nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't really scream blood sport. Boxing captured all I wanted and then some.

The Cyclops average around 7 feet in height, have bright yellow skin (which is mildly phosphorescent), and just one eye. Their eye can see the complete spectrum from X-rays to infrared. They were designed to operate in hazardous mining environments and handle heavy objects with ease. A quirk in their design gave them eidetic memories and a deeply philosophical bend. Their philosophy includes the phrase: "Love everyone until they cross you, then kill them."

Neon-drenched nihilism with a side of existential dread.

The Brittle Riders is straight-up unhinged in the best possible way. Imagine if Douglas Adams and Philip K. Dick got lost in a dive bar in Silver Lake and decided to write a post-apocalyptic sci-fi epic on napkins—yeah, it’s that kind of energy. You’ve got aliens who show up just to party and ghost Earth after slicing the moon in half (???), a dead planet, and biotech creatures rising up because capitalism lied on the brochure. It’s chaotic, darkly hilarious, and weirdly insightful about humanity’s downfall. The tone is sarcastic but sharp, like it’s laughing with you about the end of civilization. Honestly, if your vibe is neon-drenched nihilism with a side of existential dread, this book absolutely delivers.
