This week on Black Issues Forum, the film “Purple Dreams” follows gifted NC high school students as they bring “The Color Purple” to life on stage. Behind the music and choreography are stories of resilience and a fight to be seen in a world that often overlooks Black youth in the arts. Host Kenia Thompson speaks with Corey Mitchell, a former theater teacher (Theatre Gap Initiative) featured in the film, to discuss the impact of the arts on young people.

Join the conversation with tonight at 7 PM on PBS NC & the PBS app.

Most weather apps rely on a single station, often at an airport. But in Durham, NC, researchers deployed more than 40 sensors across the city to map urban heat distribution more accurately. North Carolina law prohibits ma*****na but allows h**p products containing THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. Critics say this creates unclear rules and poor enforcement. Benton Sawrey for North Carolina Senate (R-District 10), Rep. Phil Rubin (D-District 40) and Robeson County District Attorney's Office Matt Scott explore the issue in a roundtable discussion moderated by PBS NC’s David Hurst. NC’s Cannabis Crossroads, a State Lines special, premieres August 18 on PBS NC and streaming.

Amid growing debate, NC lawmakers face pressure to ban, regulate or legalize cannabis products.

During the American Revolution, North Carolina wasn’t just Patriots versus Redcoats—it was neighbor versus neighbor. Many colonists called themselves Whigs, inspired by anti-monarchy thinkers in Britain. Others stayed loyal to the crown as Tories.
