WATER WATCH in INDY Oct. 20, 2024. Crisp, fall days have done nothing to deter lily pads on the campus of Western Oregon University, at one of the watery spots there. They are as green and vibrant as they were in June, and now with cattails.

WATER WATCH INDY Independence, July 20, 2024. A tranquil scene and a beautiful view from the patio of the Independence Hotel as a hot day cooled down in late afternoon. In the distance, a lone kayaker can be seen meandering along the Willamette River, not far from the trees on the river bank.

WATER WATCH in INDY June 22, 2024. This fountain isn't in Independence, though two in the city have something in common with this one: they recycle the water in the display. This one was taken by Trammart News for its loveliness, but also for a feature that seemed to make it noteworthy: It is surrounded by tropical plants that require far less water than a lot of other vegetation.

WATER WATCH INDY June 15, 2024. Serenity and Tranquility should be measurable, and if they were, the T & S metric on this scene would be 100%. On a sunny day this week, a local creek looked as if the water combined an emerald mirror with a watercolor painting. It was a comfort to see -- and now can be viewed again and again, thanks to the lucky capture of this image...

WATER WATCH INDY June 8, 2024. A stream that slows in summertime still rolls along, making a boulder or log along the bank a nice place to settle in, for creek-watching. This spot is between Independence and the Oregon Coast. The poet Emily Dickinson once envisioned such moving water asking: "Blue Sea, wilt welcome me?"

WATER WATCH INDY Independence, Ore. June 1, 2024. If this looks like a freshwater spring in a green glen, that isn't quite the scene. It is the back of the fountain at the rear entrance of the the Independence Civic Center, a favorite place for robins, which use the trees for perching and the water for bird-bathing.

WATER WATCH INDY Independence, Ore. May 25, 2024. Water isn't always to drink--sometimes it is to make you think. Or, maybe it makes you think to drink in sound and beauty. Here a waterfall pours out a showery chorus, an Oregon rock-strewn stream worthy of a postcard.

WATER WATCH INDY Independence, Ore. May 18, 2024. The phrase "babbling brook" has been a description used since the 1700s to describe the pleasant sound that flowing water makes as it travels around stones. Near the Oregon Aquarium, this stream bed has been constructed to make those gurgling sounds. They are so pleasant, that you can find similar ones online, on CDs, as tracks playing in stores and on sleep-aid apps.

WATER WATCH INDY May 11, 2024. The real mother goose (and father goose, too), with goslings, at a pond built as part of the landscape in an industrial park. Pretty scenery among a row of buildings isn't simply a nice spot for employees to enjoy but, as this pond proves, it can provide a respite for wildlife, too.

INDY WATER WATCH Independence, Ore. May 4, 2024. The clouds in the sky opened up with rain, sending drops down on water that doesn't seem to need any more H2O. On a day many say "May the fourth be with you," Trammart would like to add: Let's make that the 4th of July, where sun can be counted on.

WATER WATCH INDY Independence, April 27, 2024. The Inspiration Garden is filled with plants found nowhere else in Polk County in a single contained setting. But there is something else special in Mount Fir Park, too. Ash Creek flows beside the garden. This time of year the water looks like green glass, catching the light in glimmering diamonds when the sun is out, capturing long dark shadows on cloudy days. It makes a trip to the garden a double pleasure.

WATER WATCH INDY Independence, Ore. April 20, 2024. Sudden sunlight and a spray of fish feed prompted a finned frolic in a backyard koi pond this past week. As rainy days occur less frequently, fish are behaving differently. Or is it that they are easier to see? Minnows in the Willamette River are a lot more visible now, too.
