& no that’s not hyperbole. *TW: SI*
Nearly 1 in 4 women with ADHD has attempted su***de. Pair that with a partner who is emotionally invalidating? Yeah😔
I get this question in my DMs and to put it bluntly, if they even think ADHD is something to “believe” or “not believe” in, they have an IGNORANCE problem, not an UNDERSTANDING problem. And if you have to EXPLAIN that it’s “real”? Come on now. DASSA CHILD.
Now ASSUMING they actually do want to understand ways to help you and understand you, I would refer them to any research/books written by Dr. Russel Barkley, an internationally recognized authority on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD/ADD) in children & adults who has dedicated his career to widely disseminating science-based information about ADHD.
His lectures can be found on YouTube and his books are immensely helpful as well. “Taking Charge of Adult ADHD” was super helpful for me to understand my ADHD better.
Ultimately, if you are being GASLIT and invalidated, that’s a whole bigger problem than your partner not “believing” in ADHD.
In that case I would strongly recommend talking to a mental health professional who specializes in neurodivergent relationships.
