KALW's Bounce podcast brought Bay Area basketball history to life @ 220 last night!

Our live panel with Rough Trades reporter Maya Goldberg-Safir and KALW's Erin Lim and Ben Trefny covered the increasing popularity of women's sports, the persistent inequities, and the impact of top athletes on the community.

The San Francisco Pioneers, the Bay Area's original professional women's basketball team, reunited for the first time in over 40 years at last night’s event. Jan Ternyik, Anita Oretega, Anna Johnson, and Gerry Booker shared their powerful stories of competition, love for the game, and breaking barriers long before the WNBA existed.

Thank you to everyone who showed up to honor the women who paved the way. Visit kalw.org/events to RSVP to our next live event.

Today, how one Humboldt County restaurant experienced an outpouring of love, and help, from their community in the wake of flood damage. Then, what went wrong at Oakland’s Wood Street Community Cabins? And, a poem for the people who keep going, even when it feels impossible.

Live now on Your Call, we're airing the recent live show we hosted at the San Francisco Public Library about this country's caregiving crisis.

More than 53 million people provide unpaid care to a loved one. Over 60 percent are also working and 30 percent are taking care of children. The GOP budget cuts will make this crisis worse. We discuss universal healthcare in California and caregiving solutions and resources at the state and local levels.

Join us with:

Assemblymember Matt Haney, represents the eastern side of San Francisco, Chair of the Committee on Housing and Community Development, Chair of the Legislative Renters’ Caucus, and sponsor of AB 283, a bill that would allow in-home supportive services workers statewide to bargain for wages, benefits, and training opportunities with one unified voice

Kelly Dearman, executive director of the Department of Disability and Aging Services at the San Francisco Human Services Agency

Chris Durrance, documentary filmmaker who has worked on more than a dozen films for PBS Frontline, including Caregiving, which takes us inside the lives of six family and professional caregivers across the country

At our recent live broadcast at the San Francisco Public Library, we discussed universal healthcare in California and resources at the state and local levels.

Live now on Your Call, we discuss the impacts of the Republican Party's unprecedented cuts to Medicaid, which will strip at least 17 million people of their health insurance and could cause over 51,000 people to lose their lives every year, according to projections from researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard and Yale.

Doctors and health professionals say the cuts will result in overcrowded emergency rooms, rural hospital closures, and higher costs for everyone, all while patients delay care and die from preventable deaths.

How are medical professionals preparing for what's to come?

Join us with:

Dr. Shannon Udovic-Constant, president of the California Medical Association

Dr. Rob Davidson, emergency room doctor and executive director of the Committee to Protect Healthcare

Kelly Hardy, senior managing director of health and research for Children Now

The GOP’s budget will strip 17 million people of their health insurance and push the healthcare system to a breaking point. How are medical professionals preparing?

California is known for its beautiful beaches and awe-inspiring coastline. But in the last 50 years, sea levels have risen at an exponential rate. Over the next three weeks, we’ll be releasing seven stories covering how some people and places are dealing with these rising tides.

In the first episode, our climate reporter Mary Catherine O’Connor () went to a riverside community in Napa County to learn how they’ve spent years trying to navigate rising waters — as well as differences of opinion about how to take care of the levee.

Series Producer:
Wren Farrell ()

Sea level rise evokes images of battered coastlines, but inland waters are also rising in the Bay Area. Today on Crosscurrents, we’re kicking off a seven part series looking at sea level rise in California. In the first episode, we meet members of a riverside community who are grappling with an uncertain — and expensive — future. Then, we hear from teens on what the land back movement means to them.

We are local, independent public radio in the Bay Area

KALW is a pioneer educational station licensed to the San Francisco Unified School District, broadcasting since September 1, 1941 – when it went on the air as the first FM signal west of the Mississippi.

After 75 years in service to this community, KALW is focused on creating the next generation of public media, bringing new voices to the air and reaching out to the diverse communities of the Bay Area.

KALW's mission is to create joyful, informative media that engages people across the divides in our community - economic, social, and cultural.

In 2016, KALW celebrated 75 years on the air, making it one of the oldest FM stations in the country. From the beginning, KALW was a pioneering broadcaster, and for the past 40 years it has played an important role in the development of public radio. At 75, KALW continues to experiment and innovate, reflecting the spirit of this remarkable community.
