Well, International Clown Week is wrapping up. Clowns make most people smile but some people are terrified of them. Kramer from the sitcom Seinfeld is one - see the Opera & Elaine's boyfriend "Joey" episode. Also Stephen King did a great job at making clowns pretty creepy.
There is usually a class clown, the one who wants everyone at school happy yet can drive teachers crazy. There is also the type of clown who IS a joke, not what you want to be known as. Rodeo Clowns used to be popular but now Rodeo Bullfighters is what you'll find in the arenas around the area.
It is celebrated each year during the first week in August to honor the craft of being a clown.
A little background: Clown Week began some time in the 1950's. Walt “Wabo” Savage is likely the man behind the original Clown Week. He is said to have picked August because it coincided with the birthdays of both his daughters. In 1966, Ray Bickford, President of Clown Club of America, appointed Frank "Kelly the Clown" Kelly, as the first International Clown Week chairman. Bill “Boom Boom” Bailey, a member of Clowns of America, was the first American chairman of National Clown Week.
