We both walked outside and stood on the police station steps. It was good to breathe in the fresh air, even though it was another freezing cold day. I bet the police were just as glad. Tom was dressed in that large overcoat, the very same one he was wearing a few weeks ago, when I first met him. And his oversized tea cosy hat and cut off gloves. With his baggy, p*ss stained trousers; he looked like your typical gentleman of the road, a proper throwback to the old days, when tramps were tramps.

‘How the f**k do you know my name, who are you?’ he asked.
‘It was on your ID card corporal,’ I said, trying to be witty. I took his wallet out of my Bergen and gave it to him.
‘That’s yours, isn’t it?’

The reaction I got surprised me, he just sat down on the police station steps and burst into tears.

‘Steady on old man, what is it, are you ok?’
‘Where did you find it?’
‘We spent the night together in the s*x shop doorway, you must have dropped it when you left.’
‘I can’t remember that, I don’t even know what day it is half the time.’ He then started to cough, the same cough I’d heard in the cells last night and this morning.
‘It’s Friday,’ I told him, feeling sorry for him.
‘Thanks mate, you don’t know how much that wallet means to me, let me buy you a cuppa,’ he said, looking down at his left wrist at his non-existent watch, which I found bizarre. ‘Come on, it’s nearly half past eight, she’ll be opening up about now.’

We started to walk up the street. I wondered who ‘she’ was.

‘Sorry, what did you say your name was?’ he asked.
‘Andy, but who’s going to serve us, we look like tramps,’ I replied.
‘Look like tramps! We are f**king tramps,’ he said.

We both laughed. I’d broken the ice. We had something in common; we both had a sense of humour.
