Whenever you stop to glass for wildlife or to make a stand to call from, you should always put something at your back. In this case, Nick is in front of a large mountain mahogany that is taller than him. This way, any wildlife looking your way doesn’t see the outline of a person against the sky or hillside. It also makes it much harder to notice small movements. Little things like this add up to make your stalk more successful.

And when you’re making pictures of your hunt, an ultra-low angle can make the mundane appear dramatic. At head height, this picture just has a grassy hillside and spots of snow, but from down low you get the brush framed against the blue sky and scattered clouds. It’s a much more intriguing photo from down low. I used a Platypod to support the camera down there and film the whole stand.

A little something I’m working on. This is straight from the camera, and straight from an adventurous drive with my buddy in the highlands of Idaho, today. I have such an itch to be in the hills right now. Don’t tell anyone, but you don’t have to go to Europe for gorgeous mountains and adventure. It’s all in Idaho. #100400
