NEA Revokes $25K Grant to Bronx Documentary Center After Exhibition Expenses Incurred

We are deeply disappointed to share that the Bronx Documentary Center (BDC) has learned that the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) will no longer honor a $25,000 grant that was previously approved by a peer review panel and intended to support four major exhibitions in 2025. The NEA has consistently supported the BDC’s exhibitions since 2015. - https://mailchi.mp/bronxdoc.org/bdc_o-2681309

Sacha Jenkins, the pioneering writer, filmmaker and co-founder of ego trip magazine, has passed away. A true cultural steward, Jenkins helped shape how Black music, identity and art were seen, studied and celebrated. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Queens, he came up through graffiti and rose to prominence as one of the most respected voices in Hip-Hop journalism. He co-founded ego trip in 1994, helping usher in a new era of music coverage that was raw, smart and unapologetically from the culture.

His pen touched pages at Vibe, XXL, Rolling Stone and beyond while his directorial work—Wu-Tang: Of Mics and Men, Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues, All Up in the Biz—cemented him as a master documentarian of Black genius. Jenkins didn’t just cover the culture—he challenged it, protected it and elevated it. His passing is a tremendous loss but his legacy lives on in every page turned, every lyric understood and every story told right.

Titled “Know Whence You Came: James Baldwin, Public Intellectual,” the exhibition features Baldwin’s books, plays, and essays. The exhibition was curated by Kofi Acree, curator of Africana Collections in Cornell’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections and director of the John Henrik Clarke Africana Library. https://www.queerty.com/james-baldwin-cornell-exhibition-20250423/

Pulitzer Prize winner and “poet laureate of deep ecology” Gary Snyder turns 95 today.

Library of America just presented a limited-time online screening of Colin Still’s intimate documentary “O Mother Gaia: The World of Gary Snyder,” featuring interviews and readings with Snyder, Allen Ginsberg, Peter Coyote, and many others.

Registration for the movie is no longer available, but you can read notes from the filmmaker on the documentary’s production, which began all the way back in 1986, and see a fascinating selection of outtakes and extras: https://www.loa.org/news-and-views/o-mother-gaia-director-colin-still-reveals-the-world-of-gary-snyder/
