Excerpt:
Devi scanned the area, then decided to accelerate. The chase was on! She drove a short distance to an auto parts store. As she reached it, she cut the corner into the parking lot too fast and her truck flipped. She sailed through the air like a bird.
The truck miraculously slammed down, right side up. All the windows and windshield splintered into projectiles that filled the air like rain. The tires exploded, then the engine block dislodged. This knocked the hood wide open.
Devi and Kolton were bloody. As Devi attempted to remove her seat belt, the two cars that almost hit her earlier pulled in, along with two additional cars. Numerous deputies in full riot gear disembarked from the vehicles and surrounded Devi’s truck with their weapons drawn.
“What do they want?” Kolton whispered, as Devi grabbed his arm.
Devi could feel her body get weak, but she signaled to him to stop talking. She squinted and looked around. She noticed a woman in uniform walk toward them. When the woman, Jackie McKenna, who was built like a line-backer, reached the truck, she stood on Devi’s side, with her weapon lodged squarely in the center of Devi’s head. Samuel Rennick was on the passenger side of the truck with a weapon pointed at Kolton.
