Road Construction Notification – Cliff Avenue
Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 17, 2025, South Cliff Avenue from East Twin Oak Estates / Park Service Road near Tuthill Park to East Tomar Road will be affected by road construction work. A contractor for the City of Sioux Falls will be conducting diamond grinding on the concrete pavement which may cause additional noise in the area. Drivers are urged to use caution and reduced speeds while traveling near the construction area and may want to consider alternate routes.

Street Closure – 59th Street
Beginning on Monday, August 18, 2025, East 59th Street will be closed approximately 300 feet west of South Sycamore Avenue. Traffic will be detoured onto East 57th Street. Backhaus Excavation will be making a new utility connection. This work is expected to be completed by the end of the day on Monday, August 25, 2025. Drivers are urged to use caution and reduced speeds while traveling near the construction area and may want to consider alternate routes.

Street Closure – Blackhawk Street
Beginning on Monday, August 18, 2025, West Blackhawk Street will be closed between North A Avenue and North B Avenue. Traffic will be detoured onto West Cherokee Street. Runge Enterprises will be making a new utility connection. This work is expected to be completed by the end of the day on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. Beginning on Monday, August 18, 2025, North Sycamore Avenue will be closed between Producer Lane and 60th Street North to allow crews to perform utility work. Traffic will be detoured on Velocity Avenue and Producer Lane. This work is anticipated to be completed in about one week. Drivers are urged to use caution and reduced speeds while traveling near the construction area and may want to consider alternate routes.

Pile Driving at South Veterans Parkway Construction Site
Beginning the week of Monday, August 18, 2025, the contractor will be driving piles into the ground on the east side of the railroad tracks, which may cause additional noise in the construction area. Pile driving has been ongoing since late July, with work on the west side of the railroad tracks being completed last week. Construction crews are currently building the bridge over the BNSF railroad between Cliff Avenue and Southeastern Avenue, and the piles will support the weight of the structure. This work is part of construction of the second segment of South Veterans Parkway from Cliff Avenue to Sycamore Avenue. Construction on this section of new road began in April 2025 and will continue through 2026. Construction will begin in summer 2023 and will occur in segments, with each segment taking about two years to complete. The project is anticipated to be fully completed in 2027. AARP South Dakota Celebrates 90 Years of Social Security

Mayors of Aberdeen, Rapid City and Sioux Falls Issue Proclamations for Social Security’s Milestone Anniversary

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law 90 years ago today, marking a watershed moment for our country by providing American workers with a foundation for their financial security and dignity in retirement.

Today more than 69 million Americans receive Social Security, with that number expected to increase to 82 million people by the time Social Security turns 100.

Here in our state, more than 196,000 South Dakotans rely on the Social Security they’ve earned, including 41 percent (over 64,000) who rely on it for over 50% of their income. As we look ahead to the next 90 years of Social Security, it’s critical that it remains strong for South Dakotans for years to come.

As part of AARP South Dakota’s celebration across the state recognizing Social Security’s anniversary, the mayors of Aberdeen, Rapid City and Sioux Falls each issued proclamations commemorating the historic milestone.

“We’re grateful to Mayor Travis Schaunaman in Aberdeen, Mayor Jason Salamun in Rapid City and Mayor Paul TenHaken in Sioux Falls for joining us in recognizing the importance of Social Security,” said Erik Gaikowski, AARP South Dakota State Director. “The Social Security payments that South Dakotans receive inject $3.9 billion into our state’s economy every year and help keep 47,000 older adults out of poverty. AARP knows that people work hard and pay into Social Security, so it’s only fair for them to expect to get the money they’ve earned.”

AARP South Dakota is hosting open house events in Aberdeen, Rapid City and Sioux Falls today to celebrate Social Security’s 90th Anniversary and to share information about how AARP is working with leaders from both parties to protect Social Security for decades to come. The Arc of Dreams sculpture over the Big Sioux River in downtown Sioux Falls will also be lit red today as part of the celebration.

City Announces Cliff Ave., I-229 Update, Back-to-School Reminders

The City of Sioux Falls, in partnership with the South Dakota Department of Transportation, announced today that Cliff Avenue at the Interstate 229 interchange will be open to traffic beginning early in the morning of Thursday, August 21. Cliff Avenue will be open to one lane of traffic in each direction ahead of the new school year, but the area will still be an active construction zone.

“We know closing Cliff Avenue had a big impact on drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians, and we appreciate everyone’s patience this summer,” said Andy Berg, City Engineer. “Closing Cliff Avenue allowed crews to work more safely and with greater efficiency. Despite some rainy weather, the team made tremendous progress on the project the past two months.”

While the project is still under construction, there are a few key details drivers and other commuters should be aware of, especially for those traveling to and from Lincoln High School:

Cliff Avenue will be open to one lane of traffic in each direction through the I-229 interchange on Thursday, August 21
41st Street will be open from Minnesota Avenue to Cliff Avenue on Thursday, August 21
Pedestrian access is open along the east side of Cliff Avenue, through the interchange
A temporary traffic signal is located at Cliff Avenue and 41st Street
A temporary pedestrian signal is located at Cliff Avenue north of 38th Street
I-229 remains under construction: The southbound on- and off-ramps remain closed, and the northbound on- and off-ramps remain open
All access points to Lincoln High School will be open

Drivers, pedestrians, and other commuters in the area should be aware it is still an active construction zone and to expect delays. Drivers who do not need to visit Lincoln High School should continue taking alternate routes.

As school districts welcome back students and staff, the City has the following reminders for the community:

Follow the speed limit, especially in school zones
Pay attention and put your phone down—watch for children and other pedestrians at crosswalks
Prepare for an extra 10-15 minutes to get to your destination on time
Use alternate routes where possible

“Street construction season is still in full swing in Sioux Falls,” Berg said. “Drivers especially have a responsibility in school zones to slow down and look out for children and other pedestrians. Let’s get everyone where they need to go safely this school year.”

Lane Closure – 12th Street
Beginning on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, the westbound lanes and center turn lane of West 12th Street will be closed between Marion Road and Ellis Road to allow crews to prepare and pave the westbound lanes. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained in the eastbound lanes. Access to businesses and residents will be maintained during construction; however, when paving directly in front of businesses and residences entering and exiting may be delayed for a short period of time. This project includes accessible curb ramp improvements, concrete repairs, storm drainage repairs, traffic signal improvements, concrete milling, and asphalt overlay. This work is anticipated to be completed in September. Drivers are urged to use caution and reduce speeds while traveling near the construction area and may want to consider alternate routes.

Lane Closure – Sixth Street
Beginning at 8:00 AM on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the eastbound lane on East Sixth Street will be closed at Reid Place. Traffic will alternate through the open westbound lane. Foundation Building Materials will be working in the lane. This work is expected to be completed by the end of the day. Drivers are urged to use caution and reduced speeds while traveling near the construction area and may want to consider alternate routes.

Overnight Lane Closures Scheduled for Interstate 229 Near Cliff Avenue/Exit 4 in Sioux Falls

On Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025, from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2025, an overnight lane closure will be in place for the southbound driving lane on Interstate 229 near exit 4 at Cliff Avenue. A second overnight lane closure for this same area is scheduled from 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025, until 6 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, 2025.

The overnight lane closures are planned for the contractor to set bridge girders for the new Interstate 229 southbound bridge at exit 4. Motorists are reminded to use caution and reduce their speed while workers and equipment are present.

This work is part of a larger project to reconstruct I-229 exit 4 as a single point urban interchange. The prime contractor on this multi-year $48 million project is T&R Contracting, Inc. of Sioux Falls, SD. The overall project completion date is June 2027.
