A Texas woman faces life in prison for the death of her baby, whom she allegedly left in a hot car while at work.

Vanessa Esquivel, 27, was arrested by the Dallas Police Department on Aug. 20 and charged with murder, WFAA-TV in Dallas reported Wednesday.

If convicted, she could serve five years to life in prison and pay a $10,000 fine.

The incident happened on the afternoon of Aug. 16 in Frisco, Texas, when the temperature was reportedly 95 degrees Fahrenheit, according to KDFW-TV in Dallas-Forth Worth.

Leaving her baby in the car, Esquivel clocked in for a shift at the spa she worked at, reportedly aware that the car's air conditioning didn't work.

When she clocked out more than two hours later, she realized her son was unresponsive.

She ordered at a McDonald's before taking the child to the emergency room, according to the arrest affidavit.

When she arrived at a hospital in Plano, Texas, she reportedly lied about what had happened.

"Vanessa told medical staff and Plano PD officers that the victim did not seem to be feeling well, and that she had been driving him around during the day in a hot vehicle since her air conditioning did not work," the arrest affidavit read. "Vanessa told medical staff and Plano PD officers that she had been with the victim the entire day, and he was not supervised by anyone else."

Medical staff told police that the baby's core temperature was more than 106 degrees Fahrenheit.

He had likely died before getting to the hospital, staff said. He was 15 months old.

Police quickly realized Esquivel's story didn't add up.

Esquivel claimed she hadn't gone to work that day.

Police discovered, however, that she had clocked in from 1:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., something a co-worker confirmed.

The next day, on Aug. 17, she called an employee at the spa, which records phone calls, saying that her baby had died.

"Vanessa told the employee that the police were investigating her, and she asked the employee not to leak her phone call. Vanessa stated the incident was her fault, and that she believed she would be arrested," according to the arrest affidavit.

Dallas Police arrested her a few days later and took her to Collin County Jail.

Her bond was set at $250,000.

This is another one of these cases where our society’s foundation has eroded, and the powers that be are clueless about how to deal with it, so they try addressing the symptom instead of the cause. This scenario plays out a thousand times a week all over the country, and who always suffers? The good guy, and in this case a disabled Vietnam vet.

It’s stunning how consistent the pattern is. The vandals or thieves get away, the government persecutes the good guy, and the government does nothing useful. That’s a sign of a system where the foundation is eroding, which causes problems that can’t be solved by convention means.

And that’s sign that something very bad is coming, because the problems need to get addressed eventually.

A surfer in Sydney, Australia, died in a shark attack on Saturday morning.

It was around 10:00 a.m. when 57-year-old Mercury Psillakis and his surfboard disappeared underwater, his friends said. He'd been surfing off of Sydney's Northern Beaches, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

New South Wales police later said in a news release that a "large shark" had killed Psillakis.

He was a few hundred feet from the shore and had only been in the water 30 minutes when the attack happened.

“His (friends) managed to make it back to the beach safely and a short time later his body was found floating in the surf and a couple of other people went out and recovered it,” New South Wales Police Inspector Stuart Thomson said at a news conference Saturday, according to 7News Australia.

His body was missing "a number of limbs," police said.

“Unfortunately, by that time we understand he lost probably a lot of blood and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful,” New South Wales Police Superintendent John Duncan remarked, according to the U.K.'s The Telegraph.

It has been a horrific day on Sydney’s northern beaches - a 57-year-old man was mauled by a shark close to shore while surfing with mates, dying before he could be pulled from the water. He has been identified as husband and father, Mercury Psillakis. pic.twitter.com/tyHOnxLr9o

Investigators recovered two pieces of his board, which they'll examine to determine the breed of shark.

“It’s a terrible, terrible thing and it’s one of those freak incidents that happens very very rarely,” Thomson said about the attack.

Police boats, jet skis, and a rescue helicopter attempted to spot the shark, but to no avail.

Long Reef Beach, where Psillakis was killed, will likely be closed the next few days, while other nearby beaches will shut down for at least 24 hours.

A local business owner in the Northern Beaches community said Psillakis was well-known for selling rare and exotic plants, according to 7News Australia.

He was also a husband and a father, according to the U.K.'s Daily Mail.

"We understand he leaves behind a wife and a young daughter -- with [Sunday] being Father's Day, it's particularly tragic," Thompson said.
