No student should be adversely impacted by poor teaching and ineffective school policies, procedures, and practices."

For decades, health and wellness practitioners, doctors, nurses, educators, artists, and everyday community people living, working, and playing in under-resourced communities have sought practical and innovative ways to improve their minds, bodies, and souls.

The goal? To stay as sane and healthy as possible under the barrage of universally practiced “isms” — sexism, racism, classism, ageism, ableism…along with the controls on living “out” one’s gender expression and intimate partnering. https://theweeklychallenger.com/st-petes-story-of-wellness-adds-sound-healing-and-neuro-art-on-the-deuces-nov-15/

Momentum continues to build for Kyandra Darling, the St. Petersburg native and Democratic candidate running to represent Florida House District 62, as more than a dozen local pastors, ministers, and imams have announced their endorsement of her campaign. The coalition of faith leaders — representing some of the region’s most respected Black churches and diverse houses of worship is the latest sign of strength for Darling, who is seeking to succeed State Representative Michele Rayner. https://theweeklychallenger.com/faith-leaders-endorsements-boost-darlings-momentum-in-hd-62-race/

TAMPA BAY — Lightning Community Hero award-winner and Tampa native Jovan McNeill started the nonprofit Cloud Nine Outdoors out of his own personal experience. The founder and executive director recalls how spending time in nature while fishing with his teenage mother as a child transformed his world. “I grew in admiration of the outdoors and realized how powerful it is for teaching confidence, resilience, and life skills. I started Cloud Nine Outdoors to share that with youth and families, especially those with limited access to outdoor education.”

Goliath Davis raises the alarm: " Scholars, you will not graduate. Parents and grandparents, your child will not graduate, and the family will not be able to cheer them on. Why, you ask? The answer is because new state legislation (HB 1105) has eliminated the certificate of completion as a graduation option."

Local meets legacy.

“I hope to continue the legacy my father built for years to come and to ensure that the voice of the local African American community is not stifled.” - Lyn Johnson

For more than 50 years, The Weekly Challenger newspaper has been the most comprehensive source for gathering, organizing and presenting news and information to the African-American communities of Tampa Bay. In addition to in-depth research and thorough reporting of local events, The Weekly Challenger newspaper also offers complete coverage of news from state, national and international.

Fifty two years after Cleveland Johnson acquired The Weekly Advertiser and re-branded it as a weekly newspaper catering to African-American news in the Tampa Bay area, the paper continues to thrive as the go-to source for “news outside your front door.”

Now led by Johnson’s youngest daughter, publisher Lyn Johnson, The Weekly Challenger continues to be the voice of the black community in Pinellas County. Under her leadership, the brand has strengthened its image with a strict focus on community news and interactive features on its newly designed website.
