Autonomous tire equipment creates free time—but that time only improves productivity if the technician uses it effectively.

Hunter Engineering Company's David Henry compares autonomous equipment to adding another worker to the tire-service process. The technician’s challenge is determining which necessary tasks can be completed while the tire changer and wheel balancer continue working.

That approach helped produce a complete four-tire service in under 19 minutes with one technician and two pieces of equipment. The technician remained busy throughout the process, completing other steps while the machines handled their autonomous operations.

That’s the idea behind speed theory: don’t simply work faster. Organize the tire-service workflow so the technician and equipment are working at the same time.

Are budget tires losing their biggest advantage?

New tire pricing data from Fitment Group shows that Tier 4 brands – those generally targeting lower price points – were the only segment to record a gradual upward pricing trend over the past year.

Average Tier 4 pricing increased from $137.21 to $140.95, while the price gap between Tier 1 and Tier 4 tires narrowed from $104.03 to $102.42. Budget tires remain substantially less expensive. However, the smaller gap means the financial jump from a budget tire to a premium tire has become slightly less significant.

Fitment Group monitors tire prices from major retailers using 50 popular tire sizes. The data covers Oct. 1, 2025, through Sept. 6, 2026.

Owning autonomous tire equipment doesn’t automatically make a shop faster. The workflow still matters.

Hunter Engineering Company's David Henry explains one of the biggest mistakes shops make when using the Revolution tire changer and Road Force WalkAway wheel balancer: performing tasks in the wrong order. That includes spending valuable time inflating a tire on the tire changer instead of allowing the balancer to handle it.

When a technician removes a tire from the Revolution, the priority should be getting the tire changer working autonomously on the next assembly. The technician can then move to the wheel balancer. Keeping both machines operating simultaneously unlocks the real productivity advantage.

According to Henry, properly coordinating both pieces of autonomous equipment can reduce tire-service cycle times by more than 40%.
