Here's some fall decor inspo for you: florals that last well past the season. This issue, three local florists – Kylee Young of Bristol & Birch, Alyssa Ait of Mother of Wild, and Amanda Adkins of The Busy Bloom – share tips for choosing, drying, and styling autumn blooms at home.

As Amanda Adkins of The Busy Bloom puts it, “We dry flowers ourselves, but each flower dries differently, and it can take weeks.” The result? Sustainable, low-maintenance beauty that doesn’t wilt with time.

Now that it’s officially October, Wilmington’s haunted side takes center stage. As twilight falls over cobblestone alleys and moss-draped oaks, ghost tours lead visitors into the city’s chilling past—where footsteps echo, lanterns flicker, and legends refuse to stay buried.

From the eerie glow of the Maco Light to the heartbreaking tale of Samuel Jocelyn’s grave, Wilmington’s stories aren’t just about fear—they’re about memory, history, and the voices that still whisper through time.

As historian Chris Fonvielle reminds us: “All of these legends contain some element of truth. But over the years, they get passed around, reshaped and sometimes ‘discombobulated,’ as I like to say.”

Did you know one oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day? At Ghost Fleet Oyster Company, that adds up to more than 50 million gallons filtered each year—and that’s just the beginning of their impact.

Founded by Cody, a former fireman, and his wife Rachel, Ghost Fleet isn’t just farming oysters—it’s rebuilding reefs, recycling shells, and protecting North Carolina’s waters for generations to come. Their signature Topsail Jewel oyster captures the taste of the coast in every bite. “It’s just a clean, crisp, refreshing oyster that showcases that local Topsail water,” says Cody.

Through their oyster shell recycling program, shells find a second life as homes for new oysters, creating reefs that sustain marine life and restore ecosystems. As Cody puts it: “If you can create a reef that has millions and millions of oysters on it, you’re talking about massive ecosystem services and benefits. That’s how we’re going to change the world.”

As a teen, Kevin Hommes admired a waterfront home that would one day become his family’s. When it came time to rebuild, Bell Custom Homes and Hooper Patterson Interior Design drew inspiration from the original’s charm (swipe to second photo)—like its shake siding and smart solar design—while transforming it into a modern, family-friendly retreat.

“The original home was pretty groovy,” says Cress Bell, owner of Bell Custom Homes. “But after a full cost analysis of getting the home to meet current flood zone requirements and to eliminate some of the negative design features of the 1980s, demo was the right option to give The Hommes’ everything they wanted.”

In Mexico City, the Volkswagen Beetle was once an iconic fixture of the streets — and now it’s the inspiration behind Vochos Urban Mexican Kitchen.

Inside, expect a lively, upscale atmosphere paired with bold flavors: smoky pork belly guacamole, birria bao buns, ceviches, and even Mexican sushi. Add in craft cocktails made with house-made syrups, and you’ve got a one-of-a-kind dining experience you'll want to add to your places-to-try list.

“Life’s too short for sh•••y books.”

Southern author David Joy opens up about writing the stories he was meant to tell—grappling with addiction, racism, and resilience, while still finding peace in the woods he calls his church. From small-town mysteries to speaking truth at county meetings, Joy reminds us that storytelling is both survival and responsibility.

In conversation with NC educator Kathryn Smith, David Joy opens up about writing, courage, and his journey toward peace: https://bit.ly/3Iai9KL

Since we're in the 'ber months, it's the perfect time to get in the mood for some cozy coffee outings. Later this month, Coffee Fest is back and expected to be even better this time around. This year's festivities inclue a cocktail and latte art showdown, as well as a Saturday street fair filled with tastings, vendors, and community vibes. Bonus: proceeds support local nonprofits Kids Making It + The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue.

“We make sure that everything is coffee-themed; even if we have additional vendors, it has to be complementary to the coffee," says Amy Heggen, current owner of Coffee Fest. "We’re very deliberate in what we’re bringing in and what we’re offering the community with this event. It’s not just a street fair; it’s a coffee fest.”

Our fall issue is here—but in the South, the season always feels a little different. This time around, we’re embracing locals’ summer with styles, events, outings, and more made for summery days and lighter crowds.

We had so much fun shooting our cover model, Raquel Moretty, at the beautiful Trailborn Surf & Sound in Wrightsville Beach.

Look for the issue out and about this week!

We've started a new series called "Sacred Spaces," exploring some of Wilmington's hidden, historic, and everyday places—archives, meditation rooms, gardens, and behind-the-scenes sanctuaries—that invite reflection, reverence, and a sense of the extraordinary within the ordinary. (Comment, DM or email our editor with your own ideas for a chance to be featured in this section).

We're starting with Rainbow Bridge at Greenfield Park, including a personal story form our editor. Inspired by the 1959 poem by Edna Clyne-Rekhy that imagines a peaceful afterlife for pets, several cities have installed similar, colorful structures. The bridge at Greenfield Lake is a collaboration between Susan Chesson of The Big Paw Project and 14-year-old Life Scout Andrew Fairfull.

Need some mid-week meal inspo? We've got you. This lineup is your go-to guide for low-effort, high-flavor summer cooking.

Start your day with blueberry muffins slathered in cinnamon honey butter. Later, treat yourself to a spicy, refreshing grapefruit margarita and a bowl of pesto potatoes that are crunchy, herby, and borderline addictive. Fire up dinner with garlicky curry shrimp – perfect with crusty bread or spooned right over spaghetti for an unforgettable twist. And don't sleep on the summer spaghetti itself-it's packed with burst cherry tomatoes, creamy burrata, and fresh basil straight from the garden. Need something snacky? Watermelon salsa walks the line between sweet and savory, whether served with chips or as a salad.
