For veterans living with PTSD, military sexual trauma or mobility challenges, a service dog can be more than a companion — it can be a life-changing partner.

We recently visited Wilmington’s Canines for Service, where veterans are matched with highly trained service dogs after a thoughtful, two-year training process. Recent graduates Henry and Blaze are already helping Navy Veteran Chris Campbell and Marine Corps Veteran Daniel Jimenez regain confidence, independence and peace of mind.

“I’ve regained my freedom; I’m more relaxed; and I’m sleeping better,” Campbell says.
Since 1996, Canines for Service has placed 98 service dogs with veterans — at no cost to the recipients. Read more about the people, dogs, fosters and volunteers behind these transformative matches.

There’s something timeless about stained glass — the color, the craftsmanship, the way light transforms a room. At Enchanted Realm Stained Glass, Bill McClanahan isn’t just preserving that magic; he’s teaching others how to carry it forward.

Writer Larry Rubin discovered that firsthand after signing up for one of Bill’s 10-week classes. What began as a desire to finish a meaningful family mosaic project soon grew into a full love of glasswork and eventually, a small studio of his own. Now, his home windows are filled with stained-glass pieces inspired by everything from Starry Night to The Scream.

“Like Bill, I love not only the images but also the way light plays through them," he says.

As Wilmington’s last remaining stained-glass shop owner, Bill has built a loyal community of customers, students and fellow artisans around a historic craft that requires patience, courage and an eye for beauty. The public can also experience the craft firsthand through Enchanted Realm’s 10-week stained-glass classes, mosaic classes and upcoming glass-fusing classes.

“There are 500 ways to do stained glass, and nothing is wrong if it’s right for you!” he says.

Among antiques and collectibles at FleaBody’s Antique Mall is a miniature world waiting to be discovered. Glenville, a sprawling model town created by late Wilmington artist and longtime WECT art director Ronald Hawes, is filled with tiny buildings, a circling train and hand-finished details that reveal more the longer you look.

More than an impressive display, this mini town is also a deeply personal tribute. Built over decades and named for Hawes’ younger brother, the fictional town reflects his love of trains, art, astronomy, family and storytelling. Every named place in the town connects to someone he knew, and every sign, storefront and aged detail shows the care of an artist who built not just a model, but an entire imagined community.

Now preserved by his niece and shop owner, Jody Dorsey, Glenville offers visitors a rare chance to step inside the creative mind of a beloved local artist whose work — from paintings to WECT graphics — left a lasting impression on Wilmington. It’s the kind of art you have to see in person.

“It’s a piece of Uncle Ronnie that we can see every day,” Dorsey says. “You could never pay me enough money to get to experience the joy that I get from telling people about it. There’s lots of fascination with it.”

UNCW is making history this fall with the launch of its first student-led women’s club ice hockey team — an effort years in the making for sophomore Anna Warren, who grew up chasing a sport with few opportunities for girls in North Carolina. What began as one student’s dream has quickly grown into a 16-player team, drawing support from campus, local businesses and the existing men’s hockey club. As women’s ice hockey surges nationwide, these Seahawks are carving out space for women athletes in an unexpected place: a beach town.

Kay Zimmerman has owned the Used Bookery on Market Street for 26 years, and her shelves reflect it with a wide, well-organized mix of paperbacks and hardcovers, from children’s books to true crime and nearly everything in between. Prices are affordable, and you can bring in gently used books for store credit.

If you get the chance to chat with Zimmerman, she has plenty of Wilmington stories—like the time she discovered an old photograph from her own wedding tucked inside a box of books brought into the shop. Even though she always loved collecting books, she credits James Patterson’s Alex Cross series with turning her into a devoted reader “later in life.” All types of readers are welcome here.

For something a little more exciting this season, she recommends four very different escapes: a Southern Gothic true-crime classic, a twisty modern domestic thriller, a cinematic WWII leadership chronicle, and a warm small-town family romance about second chances.

At River Bluffs in Castle Hayne, the setting is only part of the story. Surrounded by preserved woods and river views, this gated community offers a way of life rooted in nature, connection and beautifully considered homes. Featured here, a cottage by Michael Christian Homes reflects that balance with welcoming porches, airy interiors and a layout designed for real life — while resident Beth Robinson’s reflections and photography capture the quiet beauty and sense of belonging that define daily life along the river.
