"I still remember when I got my first bike as a kid. Every time I put one of these together, I get a little bit of that feeling back and what could be better than that?”

Mike Hinson says it all began seven years ago when he volunteered with his JEA co-workers to help with the Salvation Army's Angel Tree. He noticed many of the bikes donated for kids either were not assembled or had some issues like flat tires or seats/brakes that were not tight enough.

Determined to make sure the bikes were ready to go on Christmas morning, he and Tim Byrnes began the JEA "Bike Brigade" - assembling and doing safety checks on the bikes going to Angel Tree children.

That was seven years ago and they have been helping every Christmas season since.

Just this year they have assembled more than 100 bikes and done safety checks on more than 200 other bikes. I had the privilege of spending the morning with them yesterday as they worked on the bikes and Mike's passion for this project made me tear up.

I think we can all remember the excitement of our first bike (mine was white & pink with pink training wheels!) and it is beautiful to see this team making that dream possible for hundreds of kids here on the First Coast.
