General Motors won S&P Global Mobility’s Overall Loyalty to Manufacturer award for the 11th consecutive year, while the redesigned Chevrolet Equinox captured the top model loyalty honor.

GM’s loyalty rate was 67.7 percent in 2025, according to S&P Global Mobility. Second-place Ford had a loyalty rate of 60.4 percent, and Toyota came in third at 59.9 percent.

GM’s core four brands allow customers to migrate among them, and strong new-product launches helped lift loyalty rates, said Vince Palomarez, associate director of product management and loyalty at S&P Global Mobility.

The Chevrolet Equinox won the Overall Loyalty to Model award with a loyalty rate of 42.2 percent in 2025. The 2025 redesign resonated with customers, boosting model loyalty and lifting GM’s overall numbers, Palomarez said.

“That’s a very high-volume model, so that just opens up even more pathways for the manufacturer to increase their loyalty rates,” he said.

At CES 2026, Bryan Chance, Global Future of Mobility Co-Leader at EY speaks with host Emma Hancock as he explains why the industry has moved beyond a one-powertrain future and what that shift means for automakers, dealers, and consumers. As electrification, hybrids, ICE, and software-defined vehicles converge, success will depend on flexibility, clarity, and smarter platform strategies.

New electric vehicle registrations in the U.S. fell 49 percent in November from a year earlier following the repeal of federal tax credits, hitting legacy brands harder than EV leader Tesla.

EV registrations fell to 56,072 vehicles, cutting their share of the light-vehicle market to 4.6 percent, down 3.7 percentage points from November 2024, S&P Global Mobility said. The data excludes hybrids.

“Once we knew that we were losing the tax credit at the end of September, I said EV share is going to get cut in half,” said Karl Brauer, executive analyst at iSeeCars.

With low gasoline prices and automakers canceling current EV models and postponing future launches, “I don’t know if we get above 6 percent market share in the next two years,” Brauer said.

Ford Motor is in talks with China’s BYD about potentially supplying batteries for hybrid vehicles to the automaker’s overseas factories, according to people familiar with the negotiations, drawing political pushback in the U.S.

BYD, the world’s top seller of electric vehicles, is among several battery suppliers Ford is talking to, said the people, who asked not to be identified, revealing internal discussions. No deal is imminent, they said.

The discussions are aimed at supplying Ford’s international factories with batteries for the automaker’s expanding line of hybrids, the people said.

The Dodge Hornet, imported from Italy and subject to new U.S. tariffs since April, has been discontinued after a few years on the market.

A Stellantis spokesperson cited “shifts in the policy environment” for the decision to drop the small crossover.

Stellantis initially said in July that the Hornet would be postponed for the 2026 model year as it assessed the effect of U.S. tariff policies but has now confirmed that production has officially ended. The Hornet was subject to a 25 percent tariff.

A sibling of the Alfa Romeo Tonale, the Hornet debuted in 2023 with conventional gasoline and plug-in hybrid powertrains. It was one of the more affordable models in the Stellantis lineup, starting at $31,990 with shipping for the gasoline-only GT version.

It becomes the latest small crossover from Dodge to be introduced and later dropped, a list that includes the Caliber, Nitro and Journey.

The Detroit Auto Show opened with its media and industry day Jan. 14 — and rather than the convention hall full of vehicles as the focus of conversation, it was the actions of one auto worker.

During his onstage remarks, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg voiced his support for the Ford Motor Co. worker who was suspended for heckling President Donald Trump a day earlier during a tour of the Dearborn Truck plant in Michigan.

“I don’t know much about the HR side of it,” the former South Bend, Ind., mayor and presidential candidate said of the suspension. “What I know is that President Trump did literally what I believe he’s been doing figuratively for some time, which is give auto workers the finger.”

Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa says that the automaker intends to maintain its structure as a global company after a sweeping review of its business.

Global brands such as Jeep and its Pro One commercial vehicle unit are as important as Fiat, Peugeot and Dodge nameplates that are sold in multiple regions, Filosa told reporters at the Detroit auto show.

“We want to stay together,” he said Jan. 14. “It’s a good combination.”

The comments are the latest indication that Stellantis’ leaders plan to largely continue the company’s current construction, formed through the 2021 merger of Fiat Chrysler and France’s PSA Group that created a portfolio of 14 brands.

Stellantis Chairman John Elkann similarly downplayed a potential breakup last February, saying the automaker’s global reach and sale in major markets is a “big strength.”

A veteran technician injured while servicing a 2012 Soul can pursue negligence claims against Kia America, a federal judge in Arkansas ruled.

But U.S. District Judge D.P. Marshall Jr. threw out Joseph Sansom’s claims for strict liability and breach of warranty.

A jury trial is scheduled to begin Feb. 9.

According to the complaint, Sansom sliced his wrist open on an “unreasonably sharp” steel dash support bracket while working inside the Soul’s dashboard, causing “very serious and permanent injuries.”

The purchaser of two Allentown, Pa., dealerships has accused the seller of fraud and related claims by intentionally providing misleading financial information about the dealerships that have led to losses of “between seven and eight figures.”

In May 2024, David Rothrock of Rothrock Motor Sales sold Nissan and Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram stores to DCD Automotive Holdings, whose principals are Dan and Christopher Dagesse. The stores are now Nucar Nissan of Allentown and Nucar Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram of Allentown.

DCD Automotive operates its stores under the Nucar Family of Dealerships brand. The buyer’s stores were mostly in New England, and it had none in Pennsylvania at the time and saw the acquisition as an “attractive expansion opportunity,” the complaint filed in July and amended in December in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania claims.

DCD Automotive claims Rothrock corporate entities, David Rothrock and associated individuals deliberately misrepresented the stores’ financial performance, asserting it bought the dealerships under false pretenses and incurred unexpected expenses and losses as a result.

Automotive manufacturing is on the brink of undergoing a radical workforce transformation as the industry’s race toward fully automated assembly lines signals a fundamental redefinition of factory work.

At least one automaker will achieve 100 percent assembly automation by 2030, according to analysts at Gartner and Warburg Research. The shift represents more than operational efficiency; it marks an inflection point where artificial intelligence, humanoid robotics and digital manufacturing converge to eliminate nearly all human roles from the assembly process itself.

The implications extend far beyond the factory floor, reshaping everything from vehicle design principles to workforce training pipelines to the economics of auto production.

A U.S. or Chinese automaker will likely be the first to create a 100 percent assembly automation line “toward the end of this decade,” as several players in those markets “are already setting up disruptive manufacturing processes and reveal more of a focus on humanoid robots,” Gartner Vice President of Research Pedro Pacheco told Automotive News Europe in an email reply to questions.
