BEFORE SUBSTACK, BEFORE AI, BEFORE ANY OF THIS, HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED

Long before newsletters and algorithms, newspapers were fighting over the right to publish these stories.

In 2004, a newspaper publisher told Breakfast Serials he was "dead set against" publishing literature in a newspaper.

We got one shot to prove him wrong — and the story was so popular, parents and kids waited for it every week. He ended up sending flowers to say thank you.

Two cows, Minnie and Moo, live on a dairy farm. Moo is a thinker. Minnie, on the other hoof, is all for action. Together they're going to save the farm by promoting its "seven mysteries."

What? Long underwear is floating across the sky! A blouse was followed by a pair of overalls. A school of socks swam past a brood of shorts. A flock of panty hose flapped above a pajama top that seemed to be searching for a bottom.

This Sixth Wonder of the World, tied down with balloons and borrowed laundry, is trying to break free and Moo just admitted the knots weren't as tight as he thought.

The animals have gathered under the old oak tree. Cocoa's been poured. Moo is in a tuxedo and a "1939 World's Fair" top hat. And Minnie – sorry, Madame Minnie – is seated at her table in a purple bathrobe, a jeweled turban, and one foot propped on a pillow.

Because today, the farm finally gets to see it: The Presidential Bunion.

There's a bowling ball on velvet. A donations jar. And Elvis the rooster, who isn't putting a nickel in until somebody shows him "the grunion."

Moo's about to make a big announcement... but Elvis has other ideas. 🐓

STORY SO FAR: Becky and Abby, alone at the lighthouse, must find a way to keep the British sailors from coming ashore.

“But what can we do?” Abby asked. How could they keep the British sailors from coming ashore? Just the two of them, alone?

⠀⠀⠀ The British had put two small boats into the water. The sailors in them were starting to row.

⠀⠀⠀ Abby counted fast. “There are twenty sailors in the first boat!” she said, “and as many in the next one. And they have guns! How can we stop them?”

⠀⠀⠀ “We must make them afraid to come ashore,” said Becky. She turned to Abby. “Think quickly! What would they be most afraid of?”

⠀⠀⠀ Surely not of us! Abby thought, but she did not say it.

⠀⠀⠀ “They would be afraid of an army!” she said, instead. “They would be afraid if they thought that hundreds of American soldiers were in the woods, waiting to fight with them.”

⠀⠀⠀ “But there is no army,” Becky said. “If the British knew that we are here alone—″ She looked at Abby.
