The Hampton Police Department responded early Saturday morning to reports of gunfire in the 200 block of 12th Avenue NE. The call came in at approximately 2:46 a.m., and officers arrived quickly, determining that no one was injured.

During the investigation, authorities identified a person of interest. 28-year-old Thomas Allen Luhmann of Peterson, Minnesota, was taken into custody and booked into jail. Luhmann faces charges of disorderly conduct, unlawful possession of a prescription drug and reckless use of a firearm.

Happy birthday Franklin County!

This week (1/15/26) marked the 175th birthday of Franklin County. The county was officially created by the Iowa Legislature on January 15th, 1851, as settlers continued moving west across the prairie.

Early on, there weren’t enough residents to support a local government, so Franklin County was temporarily attached to neighboring counties for legal and civil matters.

Mason City Police are addressing public concerns after reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, activity in Cerro Gordo County.

In a press release yesterday (1/15/26), Police Chief Mike McKelvey said the department began receiving inquiries following social media posts claiming people were being detained by the Federal Immigration Enforcement Agency.
