Ursula Burns
In July 2009, Ursula Burns made history by becoming the first African American female CEO of a Fortune 500 company. She started as a summer intern with Xerox in 1980 and worked her way to the top. Shortly thereafter, she made the largest acquisition in the company’s history with the purchase of Applied Computer Sciences.

Daisy Bates
After moving to Little Rock, Arkansas, Daisy Bates helped start one of the first Black newspapers that was entirely dedicated to the Civil Rights Movement, womenshistory.org notes.
The civil rights activist served as president of her local NAACP chapter and eventually played a huge role in ending school segregation in Arkansas by organizing the Little Rock Nine — a group of nine Black students who integrated Central High School.
Arkansas recognizes the third Monday in February as Daisy Gatson Bates Day to celebrate her legacy.
